Moab suggestions...

Hey guys!

So we are looking at taking a trip out to Moab sometime this year and were wondering if there were enough trails that a stock T4R could handle?

We've never been down there but know that there are quite a few trails to hit. Any recommended ones that won't be too difficult? We're not hardcore offroaders/rockcrawlers, so something that wouldn't require a lift or upgraded suspension is ideal.

Also, we're looking at camping down there as well so if anyone has any suggestions on awesome campsites, that would be great!

Anything recommended to do IN Moab itself?

Keep in mind we'll have a baby (he's now 10 months) in tow, and a Lab if he's lucky and doesn't misbehave before then`.

If you google Moab 4x4 trails you will see that there are not many easy ones.Their ratings are for lifted 4x4's
Onion creek trail ( TrailDamage.com - Onion Creek ) we went on yesterday was real easy you just have to turn around and go back the same way. It leads up to Rose Garden Hill Trail which I chickened out on. There were 7 4x4's lined up to go up the hill and most had 35's .Watched a locked/lifted FJ and Jeep back down about half way up.Alot of big loose rocks.That was enough for me and back tracked to go around to the Top.

Went up the Top of the World trail instead to get to the top and you would need a lift and offroad tires as there are a couple of really hard spots and I hit on my budbuilt skids.Every bit a 3 rating!5 miles up of really rough rocks.

Arches National park supposedly has some leisurely trails and great sites.We are heading there and Dome Plateau trail in the morning.

Don't know about camping but there are some primitive cabins down along River road(rt 128)

Easy family rafting(floating) on the Colorado River out of Moab rafting tours.

Moab Brewery on Main is the place to eat. Family atmosphere.Great food and service at a great price !It's not a very big town.

Lots of great scenary around Moab but you really need a lift+ to run 95% of the trails.Plus they are real jarring for the dog and baby. I have a 11 and 13 year old whining about whiplash and how they can't text because it's too bumpy. lol

awesome! thanks for the input... maybe now I can talk hubby into lifting the 4runner! We are putting new tires on soon and I see you have the same rims I ordered... how do you like them?
I do know that many stock FJs were able to hit quite a few of the Moab trails, so I'm just curious as to how a T4R TE will compare to an FJ (I traded the FJ for the T4R).

Love the rims and they are bulletproof so far.
With a 3/2 lift you should be able to hit all the trails rated a 3 and lower.
I'm just worried about your baby and dog as to how much they can handle as it is real rocky and thus jarring.FJ's and 4Runners are practically the same animal with a different body. I went up the mountain yesterday with 5 FJ's in front of me .

I have done Bull Canyon and Gemini Bridges in Moab. Both are straightforward for a stock truck, but some sections of Bull Cayon will require mildly careful driving. Between the two Bull Cayon was more fun and slightly more challenging, and even a little more scenic I thought. Chicken's Corner is another popular easy run in Moab but I have done it.

Colorado Overlook in The Needles District, Cayonlands Nat'l Park is a excellent stock run. It is a bit of a drive from Moab (1.5 - 2 hours) but well worth it. Most scenic, most fun and most challenging of the three I suggest. It will definetly require careful driving and line picking, but is well within the capability of a stock 4Runner if the driver is up for it. There are no scary or dangerous parts and it is easy to turn around at any point. Most of the trail is a straight forward and beautiful dirt road drive with most of the challenging (fun) stuff in the last mile. The last half mile is the most challenging and if you are not up for it park and walk the rest to the end. The views are worth it.
