These pics are from my buddies recently converted ’07 Prius.
Highlights:
- 10KW battery pack with a built-in charger for “plug-in” recharging.
- A small hidden relay/control box under the dash in addition to the visible one in the back.
- 40+ miles with no gas. Prius heaters run on the gas though, when it’s cold out you need to recycle some dead dinosaurs.
- New rear springs designed to support the approximately 350lbs of battery.
- Minimally invasive wiring. There’s only 3-4 connection points that aren’t strictly harness plug-in.
The car drives really well. It’s the coolest golf-cart ever! I went in excess of 50mph on electric-only.
Mode 1: You get in press the start button and go. It drives like every other Prius. It is truly like any other Prius with 350lbs of cargo (but you don’t feel it much due to the springs).
Mode 2: Turn the Master Switch on, press start and drive. Again, it’s just like any other Prius except it spends more time on electric only as the battery pack is the Prius battery PLUS the added batteries.
Mode 3: Turn the Master Switch on, press the momentary switch, press start and drive a golf-cart that’s equipped with ABS, air conditioning and airbags. When the batteries get low you must shut the vehicle off momentarily and restart to pull it out of electric only mode. (Basically you restart without pushing the momentary switch.) This will allow the gas motor to run again. The reason you must restart is part of the minimally invasive design of the kit… The way “pure electric” mode works is by tricking the Prius to thinking there’s a catastrophic failure of the gas motor. There’s a factory installed ‘limp’ mode that allows a Prius to go up to 1 mile on battery only if the gas motor dies. By adding the 10KW pack and tricking the car into believing the gas motor is broken, voila, you have your “pure electric” mode.
Before everyone goes :wtf: How much did that cost? That's dumb... Understand this is his version of a 3yr old 'vette. He and his wife work, no kids. He is politically active, a techno geek and considers a bit of spit in the eye of people who hate us, he doesn't buy their oil. It's not about "clean" (for him), it's about cool technology and burning West Virginia coal instead of Middle-East oil.
