mods for offroading a 2014 Limited

Hi all, as mentioned in another thread, the 2014 Limited I'm about to buy won't necessarily be as suitable for offroading as, say a Trail Edition... no sway bar disconnect, 20" wheels and worse approach/departure angles.

I'm coming from an old Range Rover 'Classic' which is great for trails, and my 4R will be replacing it. I'm not rock crawling or anything, just usually light to medium trail duty. Does anyone recommend any specific mods to make my Limited a little more trail-ready?

Depends on how you classify "light to medium". I normally recommend folks start with skids, sliders, and a good set of all-terrains. If you like to air down, you might wanna think about swapping those 20s for a set of 17s.

Well, it really is quite capable once you go with the 17s, real tires and some skids/sliders. Probably can take you on any moderately rated trail even with sway-bars still in. If you opt to lift it and get stiffer springs, you could remove the sway-bars altogether (if you are comfortable driving a bit more defensively as a rule). Otherwise there is a member here who makes sway-bar disconnects. I bought a set, but gave them away when I decided to yank the sway-bars altogether.

I just purchased a 14 Limited to replace my 03 4runner. I off roaded my 03 a lot in the desert. When it was stock it was very limited as to where I could go. I lifted it 2.5 inches with a spacer lift and put on BFG all terrains. It was now 100% better. A little clearance underneath and tougher tires make all the difference. The Limited will be a little harder to lift with the xreas shocks but a spacer lift will work just fine, 17" wheels with all terrains should replace the 20" Limited wheels. The Limited body work does hang lower but I will live with that for now. I wanted the limited because I wanted full time 4x4 and memory seats, auto temp, etc. I will probably cut off some of the lower bodywork trim in a couple years so it does not get torn off. Another item I will change is the gas tank skid plate. My 03 had a full tank cover but unless you get a Trail the other new 4runners just cover the front part of the gas tank. The setup I described above will not be good for hardcore rock climbing but will make a very nice trail ride setup that will not drag the undercarriage on every little washout, rock etc.

I did the 2012 FJ Summit with my 2010 Limited that only been upgraded with 17 inch rims, Cooper Discovered ATP tires and Shrockworks sliders. The sliders saved my ass when I tried to park in a culvert (don't ask). The truck did awesome and the only trail damage I had was a dent in a skidplate.

The skidplates on the LE are pretty useless, so I would upgrade those, although depending on what you do, that may not be your highest priority item.

Regardless, very capable truck and you'll enjoy it just fine offroad... even without a terrain dial, kdds and a hoodscoop. :lookout:

Well it took me long enough... I didn't end up buying that '14 Limited... held on to the Range Rover for awhile longer, but just took delivery of a '17 Limited in silver with 3rd row and 'redwood' leather interior.

We've found ourselves doing a lot of family road trips, and less off reading. I wanted the full-time 4wd, otherwise would have gone with the TRD Pro.

I like all the creature comforts - especially the ventilated seats!

For now I'm keeping her road trip worthy. Mods so far:

- 6k HID low beams
- 5k LED fog bulbs
- window visors
- Heat-shot window fluid heater
- Pro-Clip iPhone mount
- Carista OBD2 transmitter (amazing at those factory electronic setting changes!)
