Monday morning surprise.

Heading off to work on a Monday morning is usually punishment enough. But this morning had a little extra in store for me. I noticed a fairly loud cluncking sound and an occasional metallic clanging sound coming from my rear passenger area. I got to work, got out of the truck and investigated the passenger rear tire and surrounding area and found that my 6 month old BOSS rear shock had a busted shaft. I'm pissed. I just emailed Toytec , hopefully they will take care of it as I have heard they have great customer service. Meanwhile can I drive this 6 miles home (all city driving) or do I need to get it towed?

No bueno. It certainly won't cripple your vehicle. You will do more damage to the shock and it may ding up the mounting area a bit. At least put some good scratches in it. No need to tow, IMO. If you can, unbolt the shock from the bottom and drive home carefully.

You're like the 5th person I've seen with this issue. Even if they replace the shock you still have to take it all apart to replace it. What a pain. I'd be pissed.

This is the first I've heard of the shafts breaking. Are they just with the new rears or the whole system having issues?

No worries on driving home I had issues with my long travel suspension before i had the shock mounts moved I had to drive home from the trail with one shock removed and the other one broken other than the clunking it was ok just be careful
Toytec has great customer service they will take care of you

No kidding. There seems to be a rash of busted shocks lately, both on here and TW.

No shit I've had this problem twice now! There was a bad batch going around from toytec from what I heard! A guy on Tacoma world and some FJ cruiser forum both had the same issue! Chances are the other one is bad too! My driver side broke going down a trail Id used to do in my stock suspension no problem and they sent me a new one I got it fixed and sent the old one back. The day after I got that fixed I decided to go wheeling (again in a trail I used to do in stock suspension) and boom there goes the passenger side! It was down a bumpy Rock road and just couldn't handle it. Luckily toytec gets them out to you really quick (overnight usually) and then once it arrives you have 15 days to get it installed and sent back or they'll charge you. I recommend calling them I spiked to drew and he was wonderful! Best customer service in the buisness. But I do understand its a bit dissapointig buying a $1300 suspension lift only for it to keep breaking! If you have questions ask me haha

You're fine to drive it I've been driving it for a few weeks now no problems just don't do any offroading and if you go up a steep driveway itll scrape! A lot usually taking the liner off the inside of the fender but I mean that's not exactly a problem jus go buy a rattle can bed liner and respray it

Man that stinks! How old was the shock? I just installed the Boss Setup back in November.

I had mine installed the day after Christmas and it broke that quick so idk mine was professionally installed to so its not an error on my part

I had mine installed last November. 2,000 miles ago. I talked to Miles [MENTION=57447]Toy[/MENTION]tec, great guy. He is sending a new shock and two sets of new bushings to me overnight. Interestingly enough, it is the bushings that cause the failure. They are way too hard, according to Miles, Eibach who makes the shocks worked with Toytec to fix the issue and made better bushings. If you have BOSS rear shocks, call Toytec and get new bushings before it's too late. I tried to get them to replace both shocks but Miles said he can only send me one. He did say if I see any evidence of rubbing or wear on the upper shift of the other shock that they would replace that too. All in all I found Toytec to be very cooperative. As far as the BOSS lift, until today I loved it, I'm sure I'll get over this little hiccup. It performs as advertised on and off road, to bad they didn't catch the bushing issue earlier in the game.

I just removed the busted shock then took it for a spin. Honestly it drives just fine with3 shocks...... going 35-45 mph... in a straight line. But I will say this, the ride home before I took the shock off was LOUD.
