Moon roof lube and service - need instructions

Hey guys,

Was up in Maine this weekend and it was 8 degrees and got my moonroof stuck open. BAD IDEA, DO NOT OPEN YOUR MOON ROOF WHEN ITS THAT COLD OUT FOR NO REASON!!!!

Anyway, between spraying WD40 and wiping the tracks with a rag and giving it some muscle while holding close at the same time got the roof closed. We are back home safe.

I'd like to do this right and from now on, keep the moonroof serviced and cleaned at every oil change. How do I clean and lube?

I found these threads but they don't show what to spray with lube? the TSB says several parts have to be disconnected for it to be lubed which doesn't make sense?

Trust me the less you use your moon roof the better it will be for you, if it fails it is a very costly repair.
Opening it in really cold weather is just asking for problems.
As for the ls what is good to use on rails i feel CorrosionX is the best you can use.

Yes, I understand that, thank you for your thoughts.

I haven't used my moon roof in 4 years, hence the issue. I would like to keep it cleaned/lubed in future so as to avoid the expensive repair. I don't like just shutting it and letting it rust - already noticed rust spots on the metal frame of the roof itself.

My question is where and what to lube. I can find the right lubricant, just need to know what exactly to lube and how to access.

I'm not sure the links you posted but mine started making an awful skipping noise and would get stuck. There's a pdf on a step by step to fix it. If you need it let me know. It you don't see the illustrations, you won't do it right.- there's non obvious clips, etc. I unhooked the cables, re aligned the rails, cleaned the little black guides, and lubed with white lithium grease. Then make sure to reset the auto open. mine runs all so smooth after that, even just opened it on sunday in 20deg :crazy: I use it daily when its warm out.

I took care of this guys.

When closed, the entire moonroof pops off with just two torx screws on either side. Real simple, as explained here:

I went ahead and popped mine off, and boy was it bad. I know, 8 years of neglect in New England weather will do that.

I scraped / wire brushed off as much of the rust as I could and hit it with some rustoleum. This only delays the corrosion by a few years, I will eventually need a new moonroof.

Then it was time to clean the heck out of the tracks. I hit it with repeated sprays of WD-40 to wash out all the sand/rust flakes/dirt, then hit it with spray on non-stick teflon lubricant. Both when the moonroof was off (tracks not deployed) and with the moonroof on (tracks deployed).

Couple of tips:

• Be careful with the moonroof seal when placing it back in. It's a tight fit (obviously) and I used a knife to guide the seal back into place. In hindsight, I would have replaced the entire seal with a new one, you should, if you plan ahead.
• This one is very important! When reinstalling the torx screws from the inside, put all 4 on hand tight, then ask an assistant to really push the moonroof outward/upwards while you tighten them down. This ensures the moonroof has maximum clearance while operating. I didn't do this the first time, and the moonroof wouldn't close right, it would hit the front deflector and retract back no matter what I tried. After I pushed it up on the tracks, it works well.

Be gentle, after cleaning and lubing, open and close it many times to get it going again. Good luck.
