07 Rusty Moon Roof
Otherwise clean 07 4Runner has badly rusted moon roof. Rust is on the leading edge of the metal frame and around the sides. Not exactly sure why but noticed several others on the forum with similar problems.
New glass and frame (one part number) runs $600 plus labor if done at a Toyota stealer. Used on-line runs $180 plus freight. Called locally and found a ‘07 at a junk yard for $150-after pulling they reported no rust on the frame. Identical glass numbers and cleaned up nicely.
There seems to be confusion about the replacement labor. I noticed some suggestions that the headliner needs to be removed. Maybe that’s why Toyota shop labor is so high! Actually, the glass is easily replaced from inside without the need for headliner removal. It is literally two trim strips on each side and four star screws holding it in. Below I am pointing at each trim strip (4) that pops out/in and star screws (4).
I will continue on the next reply with some helpful tips and additional pictures

07 Rusty Moon Roof Continued
1. Changing the moon roof from inside works best when old roof is rear lifted.
2. Star screws are stubborn and a factory thread lock was used. I stripped one with my regular 18 volt screw driver which had to be drilled out and replaced but the others easily came out with a small impact driver. I used blue thread lock when replacing.
3. Clean the rust and debris from the channels and grease the joints after you replace the moon roof.
4. Sync the new roof per factory instructions after disconnecting the power. I forgot about the sync process even through I see the sticker all the time under the hood. Anyway, initially I had a gap at the rear of the roof where the moon roof wasn’t coming up to meet the roof body. After disconnecting the power and running the sync it works brilliantly.
Peace of mind restoration that’s super easy to do and should be on your short list if you were putting this off. Below, picture of inside channel prior to vacuum, close up of star screw and washer, shot of joint greased, and finished moon roof.
