Moonroof (sunroof) Interchangeability

Hi 4runner aficionados!

I've had a persistent leak through the sunroof that I haven't been able to fix while leaving the headliner in place. So I decided to take out the headliner and find out once and for all the origin of the leak. It would appear the previous owner or upholstery shop decided that finishing the job quick was better than doing it right. They glued the fabric to the frame on both driver's side, and ALL AROUND THE MOONROOF FRAME!!!! So, I was forced to cut it out with a knife. I don't know if this is the original headliner or what because it's mostly just fabric and not like a hard board all the way around that I found off a 2001 Limited yesterday ($20 score!), and also the moonroof ($25 score!)

So important questions:

1. How is a SR5 moonroof mounted? It appears to be glued in on mine rather than bolted in, :frusty: another possible indication that it was screwed with by the PO. Also used self tapping screws to put in some steel plates to act as brackets.... srsly?! God, I want to punch whoever did this. Can anyone provide me some decent pictures? I will post pics of mine.

2. Will a headliner from a 2001 limited fit? This should be easy enough for me to test, but my arms are tired from the junkyard trip at the moment.

3. Is the moonroof interchangeable? I think in my case, no since there do not appear to be ANY threaded mounting holes that seem to exist AT ALL, hence the glue that they used to "mount" the sunroof. :scared: . Also, the rubber seal on mine is attached to the roof while the 2001 rubber seal is attached to the glass itself. So, looks like I may have to sell that off

I'll get some pics, and I want some people to get some pics of their SR5 moonroof assembly while they had their headliner out, because I do not think it was reinstalled correctly, but I've never seen another so I don't know what it's supposed to look like

Here's some pics. To clarify, the glass seems to fit in the hole fine. I just want to know what the stock method is for securing the moonroof, since I can't find any good pictures. Haven't seen another that looks like mine, but I don't have a lot of samples :help:

Wow, looks like the PO did some wicked work on that thing. Mine was held on with like 8 bolts into some nut clamps. Something like that. It wasn't bad, and they all should be there still hopefully! The sunroof assemblies should all be the same. Same motor, assembly system, size and everything. It looks like the PO had a rough time with the leak and decided to 'seal' it

I only wish the PO shoddy work had actually stopped the leak... Then I wouldn't be tearing into this thing now... Might be why the PO sold it... :repuke:

I did notice the 2001 moonroof assembly has the motor at the front of the assembly while the SR5 has the motor at the back of the assembly. Would it still fit? Are my mounting brackets missing? Do they exist at all?

Again, if anyone has proper pictures of the moonroof assembly for a SR5 (motor in the back of the moonroof), or if anyone can tell me exactly how it is supposed to be mounted, that would be great

Ok, after letting my rage subside for a few hours, I've gone back to look and investigate further and here is what I've found.

My sunroof is an aftermarket made by Webasto. And obviously does not have proper mounting hardware. Next, the dimension of the sunroof opening on my 2000 SR5 is maximum 18 3/4" X 35 3/8". The sunroof dimension of the 2001 Limited is 21 3/8" X 35 5/8", so obviously the glass portion will not fit, the glass could possibly be moved, but why do that?

Now, if anyone who is interested in participating, please go out and measure the dimension of your sunroof opening and report here! I'd just like to see if Limited and SR5 actually have consistent size difference or if it is more random, or sized by year rather than trim level.

I'm late, but I knew it was either a Webasto or ASC. I've had both, but that's a story for another day. I hate to tell you but I doubt you'll find an OE roof panel that fits your opening. They make one or two sizes and they fit what ever they can sell to. End of story :shrug:

Aftermarket sunroofs... the only thing worse than an aftermarket alarm.
