More Cat Problems

SO this spring my 05 4r developed a rattle, sounded like a heat shield and I figured I'd get around to putting a hose clamp on it this summer. The rattle was Off and on, not too bad. Took it in for an inspection and asked the guys to wrap it with a couple of hose clamps to stop the rattle. Turns out the inside of my drivers side cat is broken and rattleing around like a jar of pennies. Since I've had the sulpher smell a few times I took it in to get them replaced come to find out they are out of warranty at 87k miles. Called Toyota and they are considering helping me.

Are you guys aware that the cats cost 2500.00 to replace?

INSANITY!

Anyone else have this trouble?

If they refuse to pay I'd get aftermarket and save. Or get OEM from Conicelli (aka Partznet.com).

Do online search.

Which cat? The first one that it monitored by the AF and O2 sensors and is part of the exhaust manifold? (Do you have a V6 or V8?).

I just replaced both of my front cats for my V6. Both parts can be had online for about $525 shipped each, and my local dealer wanted about $275 in labor for each side (Did NOT want to do it myself). I was out the door for a little under $1800. $2500 is is very high for one, but I don't really know anything about the V8 if you have one.

PS, I would not buy aftermarket cats if you are referring to the ones monitored by the ECU. In my research (I had the P0420 and P0430 codes) a lot of folks that put aftermarket cats in had the codes return shortly after install.

Those ones are a lot more expensive. About $1200 Just for the part on each side if I remember right. For the un-monitored ones, I would probably just buy a cheap aftermarket cat and have an exhaust shop weld it in, or if your not in Kalifornia, just have an exhaust shop weld in a straight pipe?
 
Most of the modern main catalytic converters on cars these days seem to be built into the exhaust manifold, makes them ridiculously expensive to replace, both parts and laborwise. Really sucks, but that's progress for you...

Funny thing is its not the manifold ones its the two afte that....:happens:
 
Toyota has offered to pay for half of the 2500 to fix my truck. I pretty much told them its unacceptable and I would purchase aftermarket parts at 1/4 the price. I also, after thanking the nice woman who attempted to help me that becuase of Toyota's lack of willingness to make good on these defective parts I would not and will not ever purchase another Toyota product again. I no longer consider Toyota to be a quality product. I will stick with Honda and Nissan from here on out. Some of you who have read my other posts know I had a Pathfider that went 300k with no major issues, yes, $2500 cats is a major issue. I am very dissapointed. Im going to keep my toyota thru the winter and next spring buy something else. I'm completely bummed out about the entire thing. What enthusiam I had about my truck is long gone.
 
Man that really sucks that you got a lemon. I can understand how it could sour your opinion on the product. It happens... especially when buying used. Even with a company with a reputation as solid as Toyota. My brother bought a Lexus IS350 and it had all sorts of issues. Traded it for an Infiniti M45 after a short time and that car has been ok.

My experience is the opposite of your and his. I bought a Nissan 350Z and it was a total piece of junk. Not compared to a lot of vehicles, but compared to my vehicle standards, it just fell short. I'll never buy another Nissan product, but I'm glad that you had a good experience with yours. Most people that owned Pathfinders and Maximas usually are loyal to the brand.

I personally have owned Honda, Subaru and Toyota products and wouldn't hesitate to buy any one of those again. I wouldn't trade my 4Runner for anything. But I could never go back to Nissan after owning that car for just one year.

I'm more soured by Toyota not picking up the tab for a known problem 7k out of warranty or not. Granted I was never in this position with Nissan but as it stands Toyota pooched it on this one.

Why? They have a 8 year/80,000 mile warranty. It just bad luck unfortunately but at the same time, not entirely their fault. If your trans goes at 69k miles, is it on them to replace it, even though it's out of warranty? They already offered more than they had to by splitting the cost...

Good luck with Nissan and their warranties by the way. They're much worse about honoring things sometimes still in warranty.

Just looked up the price of the two units. 861 for one and 925 for the other. I'd asked Toyota to fix the one (sounds like a quality anomily if the coverter breaks free inside) and leave it at that.

Not all converters are created equal too. The aftermarket ones have 1/10 the catalyst that oem put in theirs. How do i know, try recycling them. 5 bucks for aftermarket 60 for OEM even with 100K+ miles. Typically there is enough catalyst to get though the warenty and that is it.
