I also pull a small camper with an '86 22re:
I did several mods to make this manageable. First I did a complete rebuild, which I needed because it had 300k and was burning a lot of oil. Doesn't sound like you "need" this, but if you're going to tear it down, it's not that hard or expensive.
Bored 20 over at the machine shop.
Put on custom head with larger valves, bought from engnbldr. Used his 268 RV cam also.
Added LCE down tube headers.
All of this seemed to help quite a bit, but I really only noticed a huge jump when I also did the "82 supra AFM" mod. I don't think that mod made all the difference, but I think it allowed the other ones to really do their thing.
I can tow this little camper 70mph with no issues at around 18 mpg.
Without the camper I'm getting 25mpg. Before this rebuild I was only getting around 19 and had nowhere near this much power.
