Moving to Utah!

Hey everyone just got the news that my wife and I are packing it up and heading to Utah from Texas.

We've been wanting to make this move for a while but finally paid off all of our debt and she just accepted a wonderful job where she will work from home most of the time but based in SLC.
I don't have anything lined up but have secured my current job, albeit remotely, through January and potentially beyond that.

Our house here in the Dallas area will be going on the market next weekend and depending on when it sells, we could be in SLC by mid December.

I've decided to leave my e39 behind for now as i assume i'll be driving the 4runner all winter but will fly back and pick it up next spring.

I guess I'm mostly posting this in the case that any of the Utah folks might see it and have any advice to offer or potential meet ups/offroad outings coming up.

Is the inversion as bad as everyone makes it out to be? Dallas has 7 million people so i find it hard to believe its worse in SLC.

I grew up in SLC. Moved away in 2007 but go back every few months. The inversion can get very bad in the winter months. The best way to get out of it is to go to the mountains and Ski!
 
Sounds like the wife is looking to move outside of SLC a bit which should help i’d imagine

Nice! we were stuck on Denver or SLC and the job happened with SLC first. Denver is great but it seems like the outdoorsy stuff is much closer in SLC not to mention all the national parks and moab being so close.

Good to know thank you! Didn't figure it would be too bad with winter tires but the 4runner is going to end up being more of a daily anyhow.
 
SLC/Utah used to have worse snow winters but we don't get a lot of snow in the valleys any more. Durned climate change. I will say it was a snowstorm in 2013 that made me think of getting rid of my IS300 and getting back into a 4WD. Got my '01 T4R a month later.

The winter inversion can get pretty bad. Air quality report is a daily part of the news and if you are sensitive to air quality (asthma, emphysema) you'll have days when you shouldn't go outside. You can reduce your exposure though if you live in higher elevation like in Park City, Alpine, Midway, etc. Living in Salt Lake valley will get the worst of it.

My wife and I are not usually sensitive to air quality and a lot of days the reports are comparable between Dallas and SLC but she is mostly worried about our older dog who has asthma.

Thinking we'll be there around the end of December so i'll be bringing the 4runner and her truck immediately and coming back for the e39 a little later. probably dolly the 4runner out with our truck and use a POD to move the rest of our stuff. we've culled it down so much that a full size moving truck doesn't even seem necessary for now. Hoping to spin the coils up and drive the bimmer out after winter.
 
UPDATE!
Our house didn't even go to market before we had an offer in hand. After a couple of counters we settled just under our elevated asking price and get to avoid all the BS of showings and open houses.
We close on the 28th of December and will be in SLC around New Years!! :dancin:
 
Salt Lake City is a good place, I grew up here so I might be bias. Hope y'all get settled when you get here! Get ready for bad inversions... but also get ready for the ease of access to adventure in the mountains.

The Salt Lake valley is a bit of a bowl and, among a few other reasons, that's why the inversion gets so bad

We officially have a rental house in Layton and will be there on the 2nd of January!!

Any Utah folks want to chime in on what you do for vehicle preparedness in winter? In Texas we have very mild and boring winters so most people do nothing to prepare. If anything Spring is more of an issue with the barrage of thunderstorms, hail and the tornadoes.

I'll take snow and ice over that any day.

Guessing rust much bigger issue in SLC, does everyone oil their frames prewinter? Just curious about what all i need to start planning for with a 22 year -old 4runner out there.

Check your fluids. Put on snow tires if you want or don't, I just use my AT tires and call it a day. You could oil your frame if you want but I've never worried about it. My current new-to-me '08 has lived it's entire life in Utah and the frame looks almost new. My '01 also was pretty good, and my sister's '02 also looks almost new. Just wash your undercarriage occasionally, I usually run through a local car wash that has an undercarriage wash after a snow storm. UDOT primarily uses plain ol' salt on the roads here mixed with some other gritty substances. They do use some spray in places that are known to ice up, like bridges. Please read the manual if you haven't already on how to tow the 4Runner. 3rd gens are not supposed to be towed on a dolly with the rear wheels moving. I've done it but it was an absolute emergency.

will do thanks, Had planned on pulling the driveshaft but maybe that's not enough?
 
Rental house is all set up and somehow i got a job offer 3 miles from it!

Finish with my current employer on Jan 25 and start with the new one on the 28th! :rapture:

Utah here we come!
 
Enjoy the move. I just move from Ogden back to colorado springs.

There's a toyota Facebook group for tundras, Tacoma and 4runners which is pretty active, rme4x4 and wasatch cruisers in the area. Expeditionutah is a good source to find places to explore.
