MT's vs AT's for Trails in Socal

While I've always been happy with BFG KO's (been running sets for years); the time has come for some new tires.

Have any of you found MT's do be better suited to the desert and mountain terrain we run on?

Have anyone made the switch from AT to MT and regretted it?

I've got Cooper ST Maxx, a little on the aggressive side for a AT, I have nothing but good things to say about them. I will stick with AT tire until I move to a swamp and need a mud tire. Tire pressure, tire pressure, tire pressure.

Last trip to the grand canyon we saw a metric shit ton of mud and everyone was on AT's, from KO2's to a few sets of Cooper ST Maxx everyone did fine - a MT would not have made a huge difference.

Imo and many others, a MT tire is much more than that.
It is the best tire you can buy for "serious" wheelin. So if you plan
on running harder trails and really need that extra traction the MT is
your ticket. But if you plan on running easier less technical trails a AT will be fine. Not saying you can't run harder trails with a AT but in the end a MT will provide better traction while losing a little or a lot of on road comfort

MTs handle the samd/stone great without making you go all the way to a dedicated sticky rock tire. Definitely mt if trail performance is a real concern.

Of course the usual caveats apply. They'll be a little louder and get a little worse mpg than ATs. Decide what's best for you.

If you're looking, I've been quite enjoying my kanati mudhogs.

ST maxx will probably be my next set of tires, or whatever equivalent they have in a couple years. my doscoverer AT3s are practically new.

I've run the older KO AT's on another vehicle and was not really impressed. I have Duratracs right now and love them. I'm by no means a fanboy of any brand or style, but I can see why so many people like them. I get 19mpg on roadtrips (that go east where it's flat-ish) and they do great offroad.

When I bump to 285's I'll either get the same tire or the ST Maxx.

Is it a daily? do you care about 30k tread life? If yes get an A/T. I got KO2 with a 60k warranty because its a daily and not hardcore offroading.

I put some 265/75/16 load range E Falken MTs on my 2 wheel drive 02 Sport last month, been to the mall several times and they do just fine, i like em. :bash: :fencing:
