Muffler busted on my 99

Factory muffler split at the seam. I called car-x and they wanted $375 to replace. Seems like a lot to me. They said you have to replace the whole tail piece because it's curved coming out of the muffler. I looked at it the other day but don't remember if that was the case.

Can I just get a muffler section or do I need a tail piece as well?

I am looking for OEM quietness. This engine sounds terrible with any louder exhaust. What model is a direct swap for a '99 that isn't obnoxious? Search is all over the place for what people use.

That is really high $$. Any muffler shop can weld in a new muffler of any brand, no need for a new tail pipe. I did a search and found replacements for around $100 and full catbacks for what the shop is quoting you (including tailpipe).

on my 99 I had the same thing sort of. I got from the muffler to the exhaust piece done, welded for like $125. it's a little noisy but i can live with it.
 
Walker Quiet flow is $125 shipped on Amazon. Order the gasket and bolts along with it. You will likely have to cut off the old bolts. You may* also need the tail piece. If so, that's another $75 or so. Should take an hour or two to install, not difficult. No welding is necessary with the correct parts.

I prefer OEM quiet too, but I have to disagree the engine sounds bad. I've got a Borla on there now and while louder than stock sounds OK in my opinion.

$375 sounds reasonable w/ muffler/tailpipe & labor. You're in Chicago & I bet since you muffler split your tail pipe is almost rusted out. I did the same thing back around 2009 & it rusted out in 3 years because they used the cheapest crap. You should get a stainless cat back (walker?) & install it yourself, no welding needed with the right clamps.

PS the V6 engine sounds awesome with a Borla or TRD exhaust.

I bought the Napa CAT back for the 96 SR5 and after it got totaled I bolted it up to the 97 I bought. Still really isn't rusting. And factory quiet. It's two pieces.

If your 99 is like my 97 federal emissions then it's 137 for the muffler and 103 for the tail pile and it's all bolt together. You will need two exhaust gaskets. And may be new bolts. I used stainless steel.

My shit is so rusted back there I will have to replace everything from the flange back, even the forward flange is bad

I would love a catback SS bolt-up, factory-exit Borla from my Secret Santa :reddance:

Unless your cat flange is rusted in half I don't think it's going to be a problem. Also I have a FX Exhaust after CAT flange repair kit if I ever need it.

I may as well get the Magnaflow cat as the flange where the rest of the exhaust mounts to it is rusted out and will likely get chopped just to put the new catback in and the upstream O2 sensor flange is slightly messed up allowing a small exhaust leak there.

EDIT: Just to be clear, the only area that is "rusted out" on my truck is the exhaust oddly enough. It did used to live in Ohio for a few years but most of the time it's been in Texas.
