My '05 Limited with Yakima Hookup & Bike

N8G... I split my riding time between a Specialized S-Works HT and a Specialized S-Works road bike. Great bikes... many epic stories. That's what cycling is all about. I see you did some debadging work on your rack. Did you just want a cleaner look?
 
Ok ok ok, I couldn't take it any longer. Hate to tell you boys, but this is how you do your bikes. Load Warrior with bike mounts. I have updated since this pic and now I have cross bars so I can put the bikes outside the gear basket and carry some kayaks, a canoe, or extra gear. By the way, even though the bikes are expensive, both my wife and I do ride A LOT!

no, I like the way mine looks. hehe.

It's awesome to hear that you're not wasting your bike by having it it sit at home. I ride a pretty fair amount myself. I cycle about 1600 miles a year, a century every now and then, and I do about 500 on my mtb. Riding is a great way to stay in shape meet new people and have a FRICKIN BLAST!
 
I have been mountain biking since 1998 and bought my first "real" full suspension bike in 2000. It had a defect and it was replaced at 900 miles by Specialized free of charge. That frame now has 4,627 miles of fun MTB'ing on it

Nice setups and bikes everyone. The Load Warrior would be nice to haul everything on epic trips, but I don't need it since it is just my wife and myself for now. Bikes on back, everything else inside. Maybe if I can talk her into getting a canoe or kayak...

RevoRunner... Those S-Works are really nice bikes. I actually didn't debadge my rack, it just came that way. I have the reflective sticker on the bottom (back when folded up), but nothing on the top as you can see in the pic. I have seen pictures of other peoples with them on the top and wondered if there was supposed to be some decals in the box or something. I don't care though, I just don't know why it didn't have them.

Yeah it's all personal choice. I happen to like the look of adding "gear" decals to the reflector. If you're wondering why the loadwarrior is off it's b/c I get better gas millage with just the cross bars and bike racks. Anyone else ride Cannondales?

I am SOLD on the HOOKUP

We've all tossed around reasons why we like our bike racks... roof, strap, hitch, etc. I now have a NEW reason why I like my hitch mounted HOOKUP. I got rear ended today... we pulled over and the lady was very apologetic (rare these days). I saw her bumper and it was crunched pretty good. I looked at mine and there wasn't a scratch on anything... bike rack, bumper, anything. I double checked everything and made sure she was alright and went on my way. I was so relieved about my vehicle that I didn't mind having a sore neck :bonk:
 
A Rush Huh? I saw one of those a few days ago and mistaked it for a scalpel. I hopped on the Cannondale webpage and saw it's just a faster Prophet with a little less travel. Very cool idea. How do you like it so far?

I'm light (140 lbs) and enjoy both the up and down aspects of mountain biking, so the Rush is perfect for me. It climbs GREAT and flat out moves when you hammer. Due to my light weight I have had no issues using it as a trail bike. I am very, very happy with it. :biggrin2:
 
I ride a '06 trek 8500 (which I love) and need a good quality rack to match the good quality bike and excellent quality 4runner. I like the look of the yakima roof racks, but the ease of the hitch racks. Can some one steer me in one direction and put me out of my misery of trying to decide.
 
There are a ton of great racks out there. It will pretty much boil down to personal preference.

How many bikes will you be carrying?
How much are you willing to spend?
You have a V8 so I'm guessing you have a 2' hitch
Depending on your height, a roof rack might be difficult to work with.


All the posts here give a good idea of each rack. I've personally had most every style and find goods and bads in each.
 
Haha, I was afraid thats what some one might say. Guess I just gotta keep readin. To answer your ?'s I'm 5'10" so with my running boards, a roof rack isnt a problem. I do have a 2" receiver, I'll be carrying 2 bikes at most, and I want a nice set up so I'm willing to spend some $ to get what is "right" for me...I think I'm leaning towards a roof rack.
 
a roof rack is a good way to go. the biggest bonus for the roof is its versatility. you can add on ski racks, canoe racks, baskets, etc. I had a yakima roof rack using the steelheads and it peformed flawlessly... any issues i had was due to user error. brushed a couple of trees and just about drove into my garage once. no serious damage but something you definitely need to be cognizant of. also once loading the bikes i dropped the fork right on the roof... nice dimple there (luckily it was my old car). I switched over to a yakima hookup mainly because I wanted something that could load anything with 2 wheels without having to remove a wheel. save a little on gas mileage plus give me a little in bumper protection. I posted a while back that i got rear ended and I didn't have any damage at all because of my hookup. both initial setups will run you about $400.00. if you go with the roof racks... before you cap them off, be sure to spray something with anti-rust properties inside the round bars to help prevent corrosion (if you use the lowriders then you won't need to do this). a fairing will cut down on wind noise also.

I like Hitch racks, no hassel or lifting, easy on easy off, and better gas mileage...

There are GREAT trails in Arizona, to bad I am in another state now...

I ride a 29er as well, but there are not that many racks out there that fit the big wheels...

I got a tailhitch rack a while ago and that worked for the hardtails. But then my wife and I got Cannondales and they do not fit on the standard Yakima tail hitch racks. We would have had to get some strange adapter and...well it would have been a crappy arrangement. Another thing that I took into account was that with that hitch, there was a danger of bottoming the actual bike rack out while on the mountain passes in CO. So we switched to a roof rack, and I have been very pleased.
 
Bike racks

Here is the way I look at, if you are going down trails and bottoming your hitch rack out, sounds like a good trail you should be riding the bike on and not the truck. Just my opinion... If I had the money I would buy the Yakama Hookup rack. The Hookup rack is for a bike with non typical designs / tubes such as mine (santa cruz) or a cannondale. A Fullswing or backswing is for your typical frames... I bought a Kingpin 2 and it works great, I have never bottomed it out, but then again I do not go off roading with my bikes on the back. I save the off road stuff for the bikes... The Hookup goes for about 360.00 bucks, pretty expensive for my taste... but one of the best hitch racks you can buy, and very easy to transport and take bikes on and off. With the roof racks you stand a chance of dinging the roof with the bike or forgeting the bike is on top and driving into a drive through and "crunch" off it goes... You can also lock the bikes up with both systems (roof and hitch) so security is not an issue. OK sounds like you have your work cut out. What it comes down to is what you want and like, not what works...

The mountain roads we were on were great on the bikes as well, but we had to get to our camping spot at night. :) Which Santa Cruz do you have?
 
True, never thought about doing camping and mountain biking, sounds fun. Its a Blur; really a great, fast and light bike... I highly recommend to anyone

Looking good. I like the Santa Cruz bikes, but they were a little too pricey. My wife and I got Cannondale Prophets. And they rock out world.
