Actually - that doesn't seem all that bad for what it is. The motor was more than a 1/3 of the cost. I suspect they replaced some seals, gaskets, perhaps a TB kit....that all probably got you close to half the cost with the remainder being labor. And it is a shit ton of work - we are in the middle of a motor swap now for the same reason (sort of...) and it without the expertise, shop space, tools and time, it is taking us seemingly forever. Luckily, we don't need the 4runner and it is a project with my kid...but seems to me the price isn't all that bad for what you will end up with.

That's a little steep and about right if you don't do it yourself or have a friend. I had my 3RZ rebuilt, new heads, engine bearings, bored out, new pistons etc for $5000 by a friend with a shop. He had to send it out for machining but he put it back together. Would have been cheaper if I bought a used motor but I knew my block was good. Good luck with the used motor.

Yea, this is all in there. I overheated her in Oct 2010, blew the head gasket & spun a bearing. I was out of work at the time (great recession). In 2013 I had money saved & told my buddy to get going' on it. I was back on the road in March 2014 & then got addicted to this place! :loco:

This always makes me nervous as I'm approaching the 'random dice engine rod failures'. After everything that's been going on lately it would be the final straw to break everything

I ended up going with a US donor motor as well. I believe I was roughly at $4k and some change all in. 105K miles on the used motor is what I was told, still running great after 7,500 miles. They used all new OEM parts for timing belt kit and valve cover gaskets. Came with a 12 month warranty. The swap motor included everything below the plenum, they transferred a lot of stuff from my engine over like fan clutch, wires, headers and more.

Wow $5,000 is quite a large number to swallow... I got a junkayrd motor from a 2004 Tundra for only $600 and I redid all the seals and timing belt/water pump before I put it in and its holding up great so far.

Although, I did just have to redo my oil pan today (Which required dropping the diff) due to me being stupid and using cork the first time..

OP, sorry for the unfortunate turn of events, but thank you for sharing. I logged in tonight to research my options for what appears to be a small head gasket leak on my rig. This was good info.

Yeah, thats waaay steep (no offense OP, and sounds like it'll be solid when swapped in). I'm curious about the hot cycling and testing (they do that while in the donor vehicle or ?). I bought a clean 2000 Limited 4wd w/o locker with 200k and bad head gaskets for $600. Just picked up a used USDM motor from a local yard for $675 out the door with 60 day warranty 2 days ago. Going to be my winter project and hopefully convince my wife to let go of her depreciating 2012 XLE V6 Camry with 65K and drive this...:behindsofa: Either way sorry to hear this happened, I've driven all my 3.4's hard and never had an issue.
