My 4Runner has a BOOBOO! :(

Sorry for the repost... but figured... not everyone reads my build thread! lol!

I got rear ended today while taking one of my daughter's to the in-law's so that my wife and I could go to dinner and a movie!

Driving down one of the City's main arteries, I was stopped at a stop light when all of a sudden... I feel a bump!

When I got out, I immediately notice a lady get out from a Charcoal Colored Pontiac Torrent, and another lady behind her who was driving a Silver Ford Taurus. It seems as though the lady in the Taurus rear ended the Torrent, who in turn rear ended me!

Initially, I saw no damage to my vehicle, and noticed only the lady in the Torrent had punctured a hole into her front bumper with my Tow ball! Once we determined that nobody was hurt, I suggested we all get off the road, as the damage was minimal, and there were no injuries to report. While doing so, my wife... (who had already called the Police to report the incident), also advised that the Police wanted us to move off of the busy roadway, and into a nearby Restaurant's parking lot.

Once there, we surveyed the damage further:

The lady driving the Taurus, ended up with small damage beneath her licence plate, and the plate itself was bent.

The lady in the Torrent, had the damage from my tow ball present, but we then noticed that the front of the hood had been dented as well:

After observing the dent on the hood... I immediately checked over my truck again... and found that the spare tire had made contact with her hood... and in return, buckled the hood in two areas.

I'm a little disheartened to see this... but am hopeful that this will end with a brand new Hatch, and my 4Runner being repainted with a blend to the front of the vehicle.

I'm off to the Collision Reporting Center in the morning, in order to give a full statement to the police. Wish me luck!

I've been "lightly" rearened in every truck I've had except the runner. I plan on getting one of these until I can get a real rear bumper for just those moments to hold them back just a little bit.... hopefully.

30" Hitch Step with Pin

I'm only going to say this once...

Evergreen Pearl fades, a lot. I mean a lot a lot!

Go to the most reputable place you know to fade the new hatch!

Fightman, I felt too bad to click like on any of your posts on this thread. Out of all T4R owners, it seems you love your rig the most. I'm drawing up plans with a friend to build my own rear bumper, just for this reason. I hope the insurance hassle goes well for you man, you deserve it.

Funny enough, I've been hit by a Taurus and hit while driving my Gma's Taurus (2 separate accidents). It's probably cuz the average age of a Taurus driver is 105.

That sucks.

I hope it's a brand new perfectly color-matched hatch. I'd hate to be thinking of poor lining-up all the time in that rear window and hatch closing, etc.

You haven't started to fade already I hope!

Fightman, that sucks. I wonder if your spare tire mod was a damage multiplier.

Fightman,I hope you don't run out of the ring and screaming "I got a BOOBOO!" jk haha

Sucks to here about the accident, hopefully you get that new hatch!

I will only point out this is your own fault. If your 4Runner was taller, that spare would have been safely out of the way of the little Pontiac. :p

Good luck with the repairs

good luck man! and keep your head up, let us know what you think about the tire carrier deflecting! was considering this mod but am now thinking with going full on bumper with carrier ....

Sorry for the accident. This is a prime example of a big reason they stopped putting the spare on the rear. Small accidents would turn into big repairs when it would get pushed into the hatch.

Look forward to seeing what you end up doing.

Dude, I'm so sorry to hear this!!

Ehhem... RRRRING... "Hello, CBI? Yeah, I got rear ended..."

:biggrin2:

No CBI for me... I'm going for an OEM plus look on this rig... so NO Armour...

Thanks for the concern man... and I do agree that paint WILL fade over time, but you have to remember, my rig doesn't sit in the California sun like yours does. Mine does have some fading though, and the shop I'm dealing with is one of the Top of the line places in town. They'll be painted the hatch with new paint, and then spray the rest of the truck in the same way they do "Fade" type paint jobs, using more and more clear as they work their way to the front of the truck. It's not the first time this truck has had work done to the rear... my mom trashed it 6 years ago, and it got a new hatch back then too.... BET YOU DIDN'T NOTICE!!?? ;)

I do have a special place in my heart for this little truck... it's been quite good to me... so I treat it with the best of care! ;)

FUnny about the Taurus driver thing... lol!

That sucks.

It should be perfect... I'm dealing with a reputable shop, and even know the office girl, who gives the estimates for damage! ;)

You haven't started to fade already I hope!

It definitely did cause the damage to the hatch... however... having that tow ball on the back sure helped to avoid a bigger repair! THe bumper is fine, had the ball been off... the Torrent would have plowed into the rear bumper as well.... causing much more damage....

John... no crying! I promise!! lol! And a New hatch is in the works!

Hilux Surf hatch!!

Not feasible.... with an excessive wait time to get one shipped here from over seas... I'll stick with my budget carrier! ;)

Taller?? The only thing it's missing is a body lift! lol! It sits a full 4" taller than stock! lol!

The tire carrier certainly did have something to do with the damage to the hatch... but anything you ad to the back will do the same. I've seen pics somewhere on here of another rig with an aftermarket bumper / tire carrier, and the tire caused some grief with the rear hatch as well.

It's the price you pay for having a *****in' spare mounted on the back of your truck! ;)

You may very well be correct in this assumption... however... I find a SUV looks NAKED without a spare on the back! lol!

I love my tire carrier.... wouldn't trade it for ANYTHING! ;) (Well... maybe a Hilux Surf setup... but that's it!) lol!

i am now going to do the 2"inch ball torrent stopper mod, lol, seriously though i've been looking at one of those rear hook hitch things and a lock because of stuff like this ........

I only had mine on, because I had been towing my little tent trailer recently, and hadn't taken it off yet! I was damn lucky! Now I'm waitimg for confirmation that the lady who caused, the accident even has an active insurance policy!! She still hasn't reported in yet!! :(

Makes me glad I live in the Rugged Rockies and the land of the wide open spaces - where we don't worry so much about rear endings and stuff...

Good luck Fightman with getting the hatch repaired. :)
