This is a pretty good story to me, maybe y'all will enjoy it.
Last November I decided it was time to get rid of my Duramax. I was about to move to Rincon (where I currently live) which is about 24 miles from where I work at Hunter Army Airfield.
I heard great things about the t4r with a 3.4, so I began my search.
Since saving money was the name of the game, I decided to search for a 3rd gen for under $5,000. A week into my search I found a supercharged 1999 with 1 owner for $6500. It was immaculate, so I broke my budget and gave him what he offered.
During all of this my 93 y/o Papaw was in the hospital.
My block leave was going to start on a Monday before Xmas. I was going to use the weekend to change the motor oil, diff oil, tranny oil, etc. Change everything that could've been neglected over the years to get it ready for a 1,000 mile trip to Houston.
Unfortunately, the Thursday before my maintenance weekend I got a call saying my Papaw was close to the end. I had no time to research all of the maintenance myself so I brought it to the local Yota dealership to get it done in a hurry so I could leave Thursday night and arrive Friday around noon.
I explained my circumstances to the manager, who was very kind and helpful and put me at the front of the line.
While in the waiting area, a lady came up to me very nervously and said I had better follow her.
"Oh great, I got a lemon and now I'm about to miss seeing my grandfather before he dies."
I was brought back to the shop where they had explained to me that they accidentally over-tightend the drain plug on the tranny and snapped a piece of the housing off as big as an apple. To this day I'm convinced that some lazy bastard was using a pneumatic air gun with the torque cranked up.
Before I could loose my damned mind the senior mechanic shouted, "were gonna fix it free of charge and you can take a free rental!"
They gave me a new Tundra (I put 4,000 miles on it) and I was on my way. Unfortunately, I missed seeing my Papaw by about 2 hours, which sucks because it was a 15 hour drive. I came close.
Anyhow, it cost me about $500 for motor oil, tranny oil, diff oil, and.... A new 5-speed tranny with about 100,000 miles on it with a 1 year warrantee.
After this experience I've learned that Toyota may rip us off for service, but they have recourse and take responsibility for what they screw up. Jiffy Lube would not have replaced my tranny and gotten me a rental car.
