My 6th Gen 4Runner drawer system build

Hey everyone! Figured I’d share the storage system I’ve been working on for the 6th gen 4Runner.

For a little background, I’m David, the guy behind Nomadik Overland. I design and build these systems, and wanted to share a closer look at this one.

The idea was to give everything a home without making the setup overly complicated.

This build uses an aluminum extrusion frame with 500lb rated drawer slides, birch drawers and Hexaply top. Using the extrusion frame helps keep the weight down and increases the strength over a typical full wood build.

A few details:
  • Locking drawer slides to keep the drawers in place when parked on uneven ground.
  • Mounting through the factory tie-down locations, so there’s no drilling into the vehicle.
  • Room to organize the drawers with dividers and add false top tables.
  • A usable cargo surface with recessed L-Track for tie down points.
The faceplate is also one of my favorite parts of these builds. There’s a lot of room to give the system some personality, and I enjoy that side of the process just as much as figuring out how everything fits together.

There are always little decisions with a build like this—drawer height versus cargo space above it, how much organization is useful, and what’s actually worth adding. I try to keep things simple and make the space work for how the vehicle gets used in most scenarios.

Curious what everyone else is doing with the back of their 6th gen. I'm always happy to discuss ideas or help anyone with their DIY builds, so if you have any questions feel free to ask away!

(Side note, I will be designing base/mounting plates for both the hybrid and non-hybrid versions of the 6th gen)
