My Experience with 4xInnovations

EDIT 12/19/2015 4xInnovations has refunded the full purchase price. I was impressed with the way they handled this mistake.

I should preface this by saying I usually like much of what 4xInnovations offers. They have a fairly priced product line with reasonably attractive offerings. I'm a third time customer, and haven't had many issues in the past; aside from some sluggish communications. So there's a chance that what follows is an isolated incident, but I felt I'd be doing the other forum members a disservice by not sharing this somewhat alarming experience.

12/7/2015
Placed order for 68" universal sliders that reportedly were a good option for the 80 series Land Cruiser. Total cost = $204 + shipping. I paid the full amount through PayPal and settled in for the 3-4 week wait.

12/8/2015
Called 4xInnovations to explain my order, specifically that I'd be installing these sliders on a Land Cruiser and if they thought these would be a suitable slider for my vehicle. They explained that they used to make sliders specific to this truck in the past, and while they didn't currently advertise them for this truck, there's a small chance they'd be able to satisfy a special order. I asked the employee for an idea of cost or ETA, and he was unable to provide any further information. He did however take my name and number and assured me that "Bob" (I don't believe in personal name n' shaming, so have elected to change the names to protect the staff of this company), his boss, would be calling me shortly to discuss my options. There was also talk of a custom front bumper.

12/18/2015
Received a missed phone call from 4xInnovations at 9 in the morning. I returned the call and found out that they'd be able to make the sliders for me after all, however the cost would be $295 +shipping. As this was a nearly 33% increase in price, I realized this was well past my "slider budget" and I'd be forced to look at different options. I then explained to the employee that $295 was more than I was comfortable spending, and that I wished to cancel. He then explained that the sliders had already been made, and that I was on the hook for the full amount. I responded that I had not purchased a product for $295, and that my initial payment of $204 for a different product wasn't to be misconstrued as a blank check. I was told that 4xInnovations would be calling me back to discuss my options shortly after our discussion 10 days earlier; I received no such phone call. When pressed for a refund, the employee said that his boss would be calling me back soon to discuss my options.

About 10 minutes later, I received a call from "Bob" the boss. I immediately asked why his company had built the sliders before discussing this with me. I also asked why he had never called back during the 10 day period from my initial order and the build completion date. He admitted that returning the phone call had slipped his mind. I get it, mistakes happen, and nobody is perfect. As someone heavily involved in a customer-centric career, I don't however believe in passing my mistakes onto my clients. I again requested a full refund as I was unwilling to pay the new, much higher price tag of these sliders.

I explained that I was near my phone for the past 10 days, and would have most likely agreed to an increase in price prior to building of the sliders. However, as I felt cornered and bullied into purchasing a product I never ordered, I no longer felt so accommodating. I again pressed for a full refund, as the product I ordered still hasn't been built and I was unwilling to purchase a product I hadn't signed off on. "Bob" asked me what I would be willing to pay for these sliders, and I explained that instead of hashing out this while emotions were high, we instead both let things simmer and attempt after the weekend.

After discussing the events with a few members and my wife, I believe it's best for both parties if we just go our separate ways. I feel as though I've been tricked and forced into purchasing a product I never ordered. I would still like a full refund and hope on Monday, 4xInnovations and I will have a meeting of the minds and move forward in this direction.

Just to clarify, on the 8th you inquired about a special order for 80 series sliders and you were told it's possible and they would figure out if it was possible.

10 days go buy and you get a call saying your sliders for the 80 series were done? So essentially someone somewhere didn't understand that you were asking about sliders, and instead the tech was told to build you the specific sliders? And now they want your money, because as far as they know you ordered the product and the guy on the phone you talked to misunderstood you?

Not sure what to do, because if what I said was true and the guy you talked to didn't understand and thought you were ordering, that is his fault but as far as he is concerned it's not. It would also not seem like 4x is bullying you because the boss man just thinks you ordered something and are backing out now. I have no advice, tricky situation. I would offer him the $200 and at most step up to $250. Will be, or slightly above, your price point and you'll have fancy sliders and boss man will be happy. Then it seems like neither of you are getting super screwed, assuming both of you are telling the truth and it was just miscommunication.

EDIT: Out of curiosity why did you pay for the order first, then talk to them if they were the correct product? That might be the one thing you have on your side, either give you a refund or give you the sliders built because obviously you paid $204 so you better get a product you want or money back--and considering you paid before they started building that seems reasonable imo.

I would offer to meet them in the middle then. If they made a mistake and he asked what you'd be willing to pay, middle ground is fair.

Communication and delays have not been on the positive side for them lately it seems. Maybe just be happy your getting your product in a reasonable time frame? In fact, seems UNDER advertised wait times.

absalom will crap his pants when I would have to side with him on this. I've managed way too much retail/wholesale than I care to discuss but it appears a breakdown in communication happened, and a customer is "mostly" right. the right thing would be to either cancel order and refund, proceed with the original universal fit order, or offer up the custom ones for a lower cost.

This is my question. you purchased a stock item and then contacted them about custom work. seems like they could merely fulfill your order that you placed and then move on. I'd attempt to meet somewhere in the middle with them. Maybe even leverage a little better than middle for yourself. this whole order started wrong, IMHO.

But if you are a repeat customer, and have previously been happy with their products and service it seems like it would be worth sorting it out.

If is turns out to be the exact item that you want, I would work with them at a price fair for both of you as all have something invested now to see this resolved amicably. For a business, this would have to be a contribution margin situation.

The fact that absalom has a paid order submitted for the lower cost universal sliders is proof of his original intent. His initial phone call was simply to clarify the order and get some advice. The shop employee brought up the custom order first. I think the best approach to maintain customer satisfaction and regain trust is to give absalom the custom pieces at the price he originally paid.

Definitely some miscommunication going on. If I were you I would come to an agreement on a new lower price and get the sliders from them. I don't think either of you have anything to gain by going "separate ways." It sounds like "Bob" wants to save some face and get you a fair deal so go for it. Because even at $295 that's a low price for sliders unless you're making your own.

:iagree: with SP2PILOT, and why not just accept the universal sliders, will they not fit?
