My high Idle issue fixed.

So I had a high idle issue for a very long time. and it took a very long time to solve it.

My symptoms were. HIGH idle (1200 at temp), No codes.

What I did first. Removed throttle body, and cleaned throttle body and AIC, reinstalled.

My high idle GOT WORSE. 2500 RPM+ at temp, still no codes.

Then I replaced my AIC with an OEM one, made 0 Difference.

Double checked all vacuum lines, sprayed water all over everything while it was running to check if it would bog down, it didn't

I checked my coolant sensors, AC switch, TPS, I checked everything. EXCEPT my worn out junk thottle body its self.

I bought a parts truck and stole the throttle body out of it, and bam. Idles at 650-700 at temp. THANK LORD.

I inspected each butterfly valve and noticed my old one was worn out, it did seem to close all the way, but around the edges there was about twice as much light shining through than the newer one.

I know this is an issue a lot of guys have, thought I would share my experience. Toyota charges 1000 bucks for a new throttle body in my neck of the woods (Canada), So instead I payed 500 bucks for busted up 98 with a (hopefully) working E locker.

Today is a good day, grinning ear to ear that I got my idle to come down

My high idle came on after a TB cleaning too. I cleaned my throttle body and IAC while I was at it with the spark plug & wires because I was experiencing low idle and stalling when I went to start the truck. Idle went for 550 to 1100.

The TB washer trick is well documented, and after some research I found that when I pulled on the throttle cable assembly towards the front of the truck the idle immediately dropped to 650 where it should be. I tried the copper washer trick to hold it there, but it was too thick and made my high idle even worse. I flattened the washer out as much as I could with a small sledge, and it still wasn’t working right.

Moral of the story, sometimes the throttle body is just toast and it just needs replacing. Still on the hunt for a junkyard TB.

I forgot to mention I tried the washer trick also, there was play in my linkage and butterfly, but the washer made no difference in my idle =s. Interestingly enough there is play in my "New" throttle body as well, but it idles properly.

I had the same issue and found a way to fix it and it solved my problem. Clean the Idle Air Valve. At times this is the cause for high idle where the inlet groove are filled with black tar.
