Looking at a 2001 Limited tomorrow. Guy has owned truck since 2001, and just bought a new T4R, so he is selling this one. He stated he has all records, down to the oil changes, and has always kept up on the maintenance and fixing the smallest things quickly. Truck has 162,000 hwy miles. Color is red/gray. Anyone have a pic of this color, he did not post any on the ad. Asking price is $6500. Am thinking of offering $6,000 cash if it runs and drives great. Any opinions on price, etc. As always, thanks.

It depends on your location, but that price seems about right from what you have said about this rig. It's definitely a big plus if the current owner had corrected any problems quickly and has detailed maintenance records.

I agree that $6500 is about right, if it is clean and well kept. Ask him about the timing belt and water pump. I would offer $6000 and see if he bites.

Looking at a 2001 Limited tomorrow.

In my opinion, you have to see it. When you see it, you will know how it was treated.

Miles don't hurt vehicles, people do.

Also, I would find out when the major service was last done (timing belt, water pump, etc) as that is costly and due about every 80k to 100k miles.

Personally, I wouldn't buy any vehichle that was in bad shape. I'd rather pay more and get one that was treated well. When I was younger, I would buy the beaters that had been abused (for a low price), then fix them up, but I don't have time or energy to do that any more.

If you really like it, it couldn't hurt to offer him $6k and see what he says. Then if you really want it, be prepared to come up on your offer until he accepts.

When I bought mine, I knew when I saw it that it had been well taken care of, plus it was fully loaded with both the limited and sport package and everything worked and it had all the major services done recently (within 5k miles) and had new all terrain tires. The down side is it had 150k miles. He was asking $9k (blue book was around $10k) and said make me an offer. I said how about $6 and he said no way (dealer had offered him that in trade-in). He said his min price was $7.5k. I said I had to think about it, but he mentioned he had two other prospective buyers coming down the next day (Saturday). My wife and I left and discussed it and knew it would easily sell for $7.5 if not more as it was really in great shape. We both agreed we should get it, so I called him back and accepted his price. We paid and picked it up later that day. I get so many compliments on this 4Runner. Although it is is a 2000 year model, everyone who sees it thinks it is new. Since I bough it (last June),I have towed my boat with it, taken it up steep rocky trails to the top of 10k feet mountains (it loves to climb) and put 10k miles of my own on it. The oil is still as clean as when new. I absolutely love it.

The ONLY problem I have with 01-02 3rd Gen 4Runners is the VSC/TRAC system. It is very sensitive and can sometimes put you in a very dangerous situation.

Hey guys, went to look at the truck tonight. Really nice truck, great condition for its age and ran and drove great. No shakes, shimmy's etc. Everything on interior worked great, and leather was in good condition. Only problem, truck was not wanting to start after a long sit, they came back from vacation after a week and a half, and went to start truck and you get a clicking sound when you turn it over. Hard to describe in words, but it is close to a da da da da da da, similar to a car turning over but it is not really cranking. Their mechanic said they tested the alternator and battery and both were good. Almost as if something is draining power from battery while it sits. We jumped it and it fired up immediately and ran great all speeds on backroads and interstate. We left truck at their mechanic and hopefully they can get it in tonight. Any ideas on what this could be. It sounds like a simple alternator problem, but they are saying no. Hard to tell, but if truck gets fixed, I'm going to make an offer this week.

My 4Runner was doing the same thing once. Wouldn't start but would jump immediately. Loose battery connection....boy did I feel stupid when I figured that out.

:lmao: If you know for sure it's just a loose battery connection, don't tell him but offer him $5K or lower and tell him you'd fix the problem. :lmao:

LOL, now that would be a good story! We'll see guys, calling him tomorrow to find out what is going on with it. Surely, the mechanic would check for a loose connection, hahaha.
