My new dashcam

Nice. I installed the capacitor version of that cam. I wired into the ACC2 wire in the overhead console. I bought a 5v switching regulator and put a 3 amp inline fuse right before it. The console comes out easily to do I was able to take it to my work bench and solder and heat shrink tube it.

The acc2 line powers overhead lights and stays on for 15 or 20 minutes after you shut the car down which is good for the capacitor version that turns off after a few seconds when power is cut.

On a side note, I haven't forgotten about this thread; my salesguy said last week that my 4Runner would be in early this week...but it came in on Tuesday, and he was off yesterday. Here's to hoping that the 4Runner actually gets detailed & inspected today so I can pick it up.

I have dash cams now in all my vehicles. Two pieces of advice; keep an extra memory card around to swap out if anything happens that you want to save (don't trust the save function) ESPECIALLY interactions with the cops. Second, never tell a cop you have a dashboard video camera going, ESPECIALLY if he just pulled you over for a BS ticket. You really don't want to know how I know these things.

Also, it might not be a bad idea, if you have an Android phone, to get a little app called Secret Video Recorder pro. It will record from the front facing camera without anyone being able to notice and the screen black. Mount your phone so that it points to your window.

I just installed the same cam in my 4runner, mine is a 2011 which has a switched 12v in the glovebox so it made running the power easier, I ran the video out to my in dash nav and turned off the screen on the dashcam.

now if I could just find that inclinometer.....:nicethread:

I am looking into purchasing a dashcam after a recent side swipe accident I had recently. Of course its my version against his so I am having to take him to small claims court after $700 worth of damage. I am not techincal so I will be installing the easy way, hiding wires. Any suggestions on a good one?

I kind of reviewed mine, link is in my signature, installation was easy, if you read my review you will see. just running a wire in the headliner, down the A pillar and I used the 12v socket in my glovebox.

mine is a A118C make sure you get the "c" model, it has a capacitor vs a battery. Batteries don't last long in the windshield heat.

My battery version dashcam is still alive, it survived winter and so far doesn't seem to mind summer. I'm in Ontario though, so we got hot days but not as much as in Florida I would say : )

I hardwired mine to the fuse box on the driver side foot panel. I bought the kit from the dash cam store website for 40 bucks. All i did was connect the fuse adapter that came with the kit and i used the ignition fuse to keep on while the car is on and off when off and just find a screw that is already on the truck to ground it. From There i ran the wire up through the side pillar ( be careful with the airbag don't damage it) use zip ties to secure the wire to the wires that are already there then, from there u just run it on the edge of the roof and use the rear view mirror cover to hide it. That's all u gotta do. The blue line is where the wire should go to connect your dash cam.

Has anyone hardwired their dash cam? If so, any pics, diagrams, or narrative as to how? My DOD arrives next week and I really want to hardwire it.

I did. It looks very clean. No wires other than the charging wire.

I used the power mirror for power under the 4WD knobs.

Hardware questions

Hello, just purchased an A118c and want to hardware it, after searching the forums for quite a bit this thread had provided very useful info but I have just a couple questions.

First I'll apologize, I have no experience with car electronics or any electronic wiring for that matter.

Where did you connect the black (Ground) wire, can I connect it right to that screw on the bottom of the fuse box?

The kit hardwiring kit I bought (I'll link below) says it can be connected to a always on fuse and auto shut off if the power gets too low, any thoughts on this? Can I really trust it? I do not want to be messing with my brand new car battery if it can't be trusted.

If I can trust this, any suggestion which fuse to connect to?
And if not, looks like you connected to ignition fuse? Seems like I would want to choose a less important fuse, maybe cig outlet?

Lastly how easy is it to remove A pillar, pop off "air bag" cap, unscrew bolt, and gently/firmly pull off from top down?

Thank you for any feedback possible, as I said I'm very inexperienced, and in no way want to mess up my fantastic brand new 4Runner. But since I purchased this due to an uninsured motorist pulling out in front of me and causing me to total my jeep, I feel dash cam is a very good idea!!

check out blackboxmycar.com and their youtube channel. the videos are great and i got my cam wired up in no time (i got a blackvue though so its a little different and i used a power magic pro kit free with purchase from blackboxmycar.com).

if youve never used fuse taps before EACH slot in the fuse tap must be populated!!!! you cant use a fuse tap with a single fuse! hit the auto parts store and buy double the amount of fuses for the amount of fuse taps you are going to utilize. Your factory fuses WILL NOT fit in the fuse tap!

First I used Mobius camera, but it fried in California sun, then I used 808 #16 for some time, but I found the 720p resolution is not good enough to get the license plate recorded. Now I'm using Blueskysea Novatek 96650 Full HD 1080P G1WH, which quite OK for the job. I put it between mirror and windshield powered from USB below the radio (not hardwired). I'm gonna to wire it properly but at the same time, when I add backup camera with mirror display to my SR5. Some day.

[MENTION=73075]axxman[/MENTION] - I realize this thread is a couple of years old, but I just recently decided to consider installing a dashcam. My question: when you ran the AV out from your dashcam to the head unit, did it plug into the AV-IN or the front camera input of the head unit?

I dont believe I have a "front camera input" on my Alpine HU, I am pretty sure I plugged it into the AV in as I can go on the head unit and choose AV in to see the camera video.
