My old 3rd gen auction...sad.

I looked up the VIN to see where my old 3rd gen is these days...and I found the auction for it.

Someone paid $750 for it, but what I really want to know is if it's on the road again or being parted out. The damage estimate on the auction said $5900 which doesn't jive with what I was told by the collision shop about the frame being damaged beyond repair and a replacement costing over $10k. What do you make of that?

Bummer. Really doesn't look that bad from the pics, perhaps worse in person. Certainly looks less damaged than many of the others listed right below it.

It had a rather large head sized dimple in the frame right behind the driver's side wheel. I was told by a reputable collision shop that it wasn't repairable and it would be heinously expensive to replace the frame. I wouldn't put it past this whole rotten industry to lie about stuff though.

I'm guessing whoever bought it is going to part it out. I mean, recouping even $1k out of it wouldn't be that hard given the nice tires I had on there, recently replaced front suspension, all of the newer OEM front end components I put in there, etc. As I'm typing this I'm getting sadder. lol

Yeah, that wasn't rebuilt. But also, it let's you know why you should always buy back your vehicle from the insurance company after a total.

The engine+trans is worth more than what was paid. Also, its a great donor for a 4WD swap. :becky:

I really considered it, but I don't own my house and I don't have a garage that would have fit it. I also didn't really have the time to be picking her apart. Ah well, it's just more fuel for the "buy a house" fire that I have.

What insurance adjusters say is a load of BS. You could have easily found a donor 4runner with a good frame for dirt cheap and have someone swap it. I went through that before and it’s very easy. What I did I’m my situation was got a donor car with a blown engine from copart for $600 and took the frame from it and did all the work with the help of my dad which took us 2 days to disassemble both 4runners and swap the frames. Now I have a good body on a good frame that cost me pocket change.

Haha yeah, a head-sized simple in your frame is best repaired with a new frame- absolutely.
Unless you have ALL the resources to get a donor vehicle, have the shop space and tools to take on such a task, and have the time to do it- replacing the frame is not a "quick and easy" kinda job for the average joe!
And that is even if you live in an area where you can find a straight-frame donor that is rust-free enough to make it worth swapping.
If you feel you were rightly compensated for the 4Runner, you made the right choice to just let it go [emoji1365]

I'd argue that it can also, instead, depend on the depth of your tools and talent.
Sadly, when it comes to vehicle maintenance and repair these days, most folks don't have either.

Man, that guy is freaking insane. By the time he's normally done though, I'm not sure I would drive the thing and feel safe, lol. But he definitely seems like a metal magician.

Thanks for the input all. I've gotten better about figuring out when shops don't want to do the work they'll just give you some ridiculously high quote to make you go away. I'm pretty sure that's what happened in my case, and it's understandable I guess, but I wish they'd just be honest and say "It's not impossible, but we just don't have the space for a project like that right now".

That said, I definitely don't have the space in a rental house driveway to do a frame swap. I'm more driveway mechanic savvy than most people I know, but I'm certainly not a Arthur Tussik or whatever. The space to host a donor vehicle, the means to get said donor vehicle to my house, and then remove the frame and the rest isn't just a simple project. I know it's hard for some guys here to understand that what might seem simple to you with whatever resources you have, isn't simple to everyone. It's not because they're stupid or a lazy millennial, it's just different circumstances. I'd love to have a 4 car garage and a lift...or know someone who owns a garage, but...yeah.

At the end of the day I got close to $6k for a truck I paid $6600 for 8 years prior. Yeah, I put a lot of sweat and OEM parts into it, and had a lot of good memories with that truck, so that sucked. But it also wasn't perfect by any stretch, so starting over might not have been a bad thing either. It's just no one likes feeling like they got a little swindled...
