My Rearview Mirror Fell Off the Windshield

I'm trying to figure out what glue I need to use to reattach the mirror. It doesn't attach directly to the glass but to a black plastic sticker that is itself attached to the glass. Any ideas?

Any autoparts store will have rearview mirror reattachment kits. There should be a metal piece that the mirror screws on to. You will have to readhere that piece, let the glue set and then mount to it.

I've used others Autoparts stores in my Camry which every year I seamed to have to re-glue it.

Does the glue adhere To the Plastic Strip on the Windshield?

Does the glue adhere to the black plastic strip on the windshield or should I scrape that strip off, then glue directly to the glass?

I have scrupulously followed the directions, thoroughly cleaned both the metal button and the windshield plastic, applied with the temperature above 50F and below 80F, allowed the glue to cure for 48 hours before attaching the mirror and still it falls off. This is nuts. Ideas?

use a razor blade to remove the old goop.. then use alcohol to clean the glass and metal pad... put the glue on the pad surface . place tape just under the location of install then use tape to hold the metal pad in place.. normally 24 hrs in warm weather.

also use a clean cloth to clean up the glue surface no paper ..

Buy a better install kit, the cheap ones don't always work

I purchased a 2005 4runner in July 2023. Rearview mirror fell off a week later and the glass has that plastic where the mirror goes that you cannot get off with a razor. Since then, I have tried Loctite 37438, Permatex 81840, 3M High Bond and several other mirror adhesives which I cannot remember the name. I followed directions exactly as outlined. Some lasted a few months to less than a day. I finally gave up and drove without the mirror. In desperation tried something completely different 3M VHB adhesive pads for Dash cams. It comes in a square and I cut it to the complete outline of the plastic piece of the mirror mount not just the metal piece you glue on. Cleaned everything good used the adhesion promoter and stuck it on the windshield. It been almost 4 months and it made it all the way through the Texas summer and has not moved.
