Navigation/GPS recommendations?

I'm wondering what other T4R owners use for navigation/compass/GPS?

I'm considering buying a GPS (Garmin/Tom-Tom) for my 4Runner, but I want it to be something that will tell me the direction/compass and even give me directions...

Are there any cool alternatives to the standard GPS units out there? Cheaper, even?

(student here - hard to embrace the thought of $100 on just a GPS unit)

Also: I'm aware of the mods one can do with the Hilux part (what's it called again?), I'm open to that, but it's a bit of work for one with no experience...

Basically, something with a lot of stats (I LOVE stats, like speed, elevation, direction, temps, etc), but inexpensive, yet high quality. I don't think anything exists?

I bought my Verizon Galaxy Nexus on Amazon.com for $229 as an upgrade ($99 4 new customers)

It is one of the best GPS navigation systems out. 1280 x 720 resolution as well

BTW, it also functions as a phone.

I have an old Garmin that needs upgrading. I recommend going to the local library and seeing what Consumer Reports recommends. They explain features, list prices, and recommends models. Cut to the chase and the choice is easy. :bigok:

Buy pretty well anything Garmin, and you can download the newest maps as torrents and load them on with a USB cable (drag & drop, replace the old map file with a new one). If you want the newer ones with nicer screens & graphics, then you really aren't shopping on price anymore. A used one can be had for $50, anything 255 and up really. Widescreen is nice.

I'd like to get Europe maps as well, since I'd like to let others borrow this when/if they go to Europe, I wonder if I could find EU maps as well on the torrents...

Costco also has really good prices on handheld NAV units. I am not sure if you are a member but their deals are good.

They are out there, might take a bit of searching for them is all. You may need to get a model with an SD expansion slot if you want to fit all those maps on at the same time.
