It is a DVD based navigation.

A GPS system that stores the map data locally is a lot more powerful. The cell phone companies charge you a lot of money for the service, most of which goes to transmitting map data over the air. Maps have a lot of data underneath, and it solves a lot of design challenges if you have the map stored in a large flash memory pool or on a disc. Plus, a device with the map on board will keep working when you drive away from the cell phone coverage!

Why do you think they didnt just put a GPS Based Navigation
Actual GPS signals are used to calculate your location and coordinates. As toto mentioned above, the maps and POI data is stored on the DVD.

Original post is probably referring to internet based mapping like Google maps navigation on smart phones. Great thing about these maps is that POIs are constantly updated. Bad thing is once you're out of cell tower range, no more maps.

Get a Garmin Nuvi

Just got the Garmin Nuvi 260w . . . updates through $15 usb cable and is otherwise free. Fantastic investment.

the ones that show traffic problems are pretty sweet. i do have the dvd based navigation in my prius and there is a lot of stuff that's missing, especially if you live in an area with a lot of new development.

I believe that's the firmware only. Mapping updates are $70 or 80 each year, at least that's the case on my Nuvi 660.
