Necessary modifications to make a 5th Gen overland ready.

I would like your collective advice on how to make my 2012 SR5 4wd overland ready. I am not interested in rock crawling, just getting to remote high mountain lakes in the Wind River Range in Wyoming. What are the necessary wheel/tire mods, suspension mods, recovery winch equipment, and protection. I am probably not going to add air lockers or raise the suspension to extreme heights.

By yourself or with a group?


If alone I would certainly make sure to have:
> second battery install or backup battery source
> air compressor or air tank setup
> tools and common parts for repair
> first aid, including trauma items
> extra fuel
> water and filter system
> recovery gear to include winch, tree straps, winch line extensions, snatch block, shackles, etc
> some sort of communication that works at location - cell phone, CB or ham, sat phone, etc.
> matches! lighter or other means to start campfire
> knife, axe, saw

As far as the truck goes, you could probably do most off roading with a stock 4runner by just adding armor. Skid plates, sliders and appropriate tire tread will go a long way with choosing the right drive lines and not pushing beyond trucks limits.

Truck wise, you'll probably want at least a rear locker, a small lift, semi-aggressive tires, and a winch. As well as armor where you see fit. Also a high lift jack and some traction devices never hurt.

I find that even in my 2-3 day trips my cab gets very cluttered so especially for an extended trip some decent storage and a drawer might do you good. A roof rack would also help add that extra storage.

If you plan on keeping food cold I would invest in an ARB fridge, a second battery, and a solar trickle charger (MAKE SURE YOU GET ONE THAT WILL NOT OVER CHARGE)

Other than that, dress comfortably, bring plenty of water, a source of fire, knives, a decent first aid kit, some TP, and some MRE's to save the day.

Thanks for your helpful suggestions. There may be times I am alone. I would have never thought of a second power source or air compressor.

In a group the list would vary as you can pool group resources but on your own depending on how far from civilization it pays to be as prepared as possible.
