Need advice concerning regearing 4.56 or 4.88?

Hello,

I have already read million threads about re-gearing and made calculations.
On paper, 4.56s are perfect for me.
I have got 97 hilux, kz-te Tdiesel, with manual r151f transmission and 32s wheels, all stock gears 4.1.

I plan to move to 33s in nearest future and I really do think that is the upper margin for me, so 4.56s perfectly fit me, but there is one glitch.

4,56 have 41/9 teeth and 4.88s have 39/8, thus bigger and beefier teeth.

So,I wonder what durability wise is difference between those two? is 488 that much stronger?

on the other hand I roll my 4.1s for 7th year now on 32s (almost 20 year old car) and had no issues so far. although I mud about 20-25% of time.So would 4,56s be as durable as 41/10, probably with 33s I will be mudding more + I will install elocker together with regearing.

Only moment I do not want to put 488s is strain to my engine on the highway.for the time being 60 mph translates into 2500rpm, in case of 488 and same conditions rpms will hit 3000 and mpg, my ears and pocket will all be stressed, taking into account the fact that another 40% of my mileage is hitting the highway.

Any suggestions will be appreciated,

Once again I got 5 spd manual, if I had auto I would go for 488 without looking back!

you will not have a problem with the 4.56's. in my crawler I run 5.29's and 39.5 tall pittbull rockers. The key is when setting up your gears make sure you are putting substantial preload into the side bearings. Zuke recommends 100 ftb.

Toyota gear install

set up right toy gears rarely have a problem.

I have a 5speed as well and 4.88's but with 35's and I wish with the amount of highway driving I do that I had gone 4.56's. Not that I'm complaining mind you but a little less rpm on the freeway would be nice.

Thanks for advice, that is exactly what I am afraid of. with 4.88 60 mph will make 3000rpms and overtaking will take me up to 3.5-4 k rpms, whereas redline on my diesel is at 4,4 :(

The only thing that holds me up from buying 4.56s are local guys here in Georgia, who claim that 4.56s are much weaker than 488, even weaker than 410s. changing gear only in parts will cost me about 700$ (buying + shippining + customs clearance) and I do not want to make a wrong choice, nor I want to be unable to drive on highway as well.

I had second thoughts about growing big on tyres, like 35s, but this will involve much more money investment both in preparing and maintenance afterwards

I have also am 5 speed and with 33's I am thinking just swapping for 4.30's from an auto 4runner might be a nice easy and inexpensive solution

Lot of people complaining about 4.30s breaking under the load and the difference is not that much worth of a hassle

what Rpm is your car at 60mph? 70 mph?

Although with manual trans my first gear is quite low, 4.53 + 2.5ish transfer case I think I still need lowing gears as my highway and city mpg differ quite a lot.

I got 23-24 mpg on highway and 15-17 mpg in the city

my RPM's at 65 are right around 2900 and at 75 about 3200. Nothing horrible but just a tad higher than I would like. I may need to go to 37's to get where I want. LOL That isn't gonna happen except in my dreams. As far as strength goes, I would be really surprised if anyone on 33's could break a set of even 5.29's that are properly set up. my crawler is running 5.29's with dual transfer cases and 39.5 pittbull rockers and they have been beat for 5+ years with no problems at all. Just crank the side bearings and you won't get deflection which is why gears typically break.
