Thank you, [MENTION=130999]Inv4drZm[/MENTION], for helping me realize that my original post was two things I never like to be: lazy and inconsiderate. The first move anyone should make before asking here is quite obvious - crawl under the truck and see what you can see. When I did that this morning, I was immediately able to locate the leak. I would still appreciate any advice as noted in my post below and I regret wasting the time of those who read this thread before I did my homework. //
Noticed a spot on the concrete where my '07 4WD Sport had been parked for only about 45 minutes. It was maybe the diameter of a CD and at first I thought it was water - very clear and didn't leave any color on a white paper towel - but there was a faint oily smell. This was after driving home from Lowes, about 30 minutes away, pretty loaded down - 9 4x8 sheets of 1/4 inch plyboard, a bunch of molding and lumber, a couple of saws and some groceries. Load was several hundred pounds more than normal for sure.
I haven't had a chance to take pics or do an extensive inspection yet but all of the under-the-hood fluids are at normal levels and it looks as if there's a coating in the vicinity of the front transfer case.
Read up on various leaks here on the forum and am hoping to get answers to a few questions:
1) In threads where posters cited the year of their rigs (very helpful when doing research), just about all of the 4th Gen transfer case leak issues appeared to be with 2003-2005 models. Has anyone had it with a 2006+?
2) The truck was driving normally up until I saw the leak. Assuming it is the front transfer case or actuator seal, would it be unsafe or potentially cause more damage to drive the truck in 2WD until it's repaired?
3) Does the fluid description match what's in the XREAS? Though I think it's a long shot, that would be much preferred over a t-case leak. ;-)
3) Any advice on narrowing down the source as much as possible? I like being as informed as possible when discussing with my mechanic.
