This is so helpful to know. I hope I haven't done any permanent damage in the meantime.

You can't damage it but with some heavy vehicles it's possible to use their weight to jam the pawl in place. I don't think the 4Runner is heavy enough to do that or there's a hill steep enough to do it on, even in SF.
