I did not solder my pins as described in the first post, just cleaned and stretched the springs carefully and added a little solder to the contact points. If I'd tried to solder the pins as described I'm pretty sure it'd have ended up on one side of the room and me on the other, mumbling to myself. Kudos to those with the patience for it.
I also had a cracked resistor solder joint that took some very hard looking to see. Easy fix that made the most difference.

Yes it's functional, springs are good and all that. No one has pm-ed me about it so...

tried the repair clock worked for less than a minute, i pulled it apart again, checked all my solder joints and re flowed the solder on the chips, came back on for 1 second, i am pretty sure this clock is dead.
