So my 1997 V6 Ltd 4rnr has been whining/howling from the rear for the last 12,000 km's just on accel only in the 55-70km speed range. I think it's becoming steadily louder too !
The mech at the tranny rebuild shop today says it's the rear pinion bearing and are recommending a diff rebuild kit, which also includes new axle seals. Ball park figure of $1000 Cdn. all done.
I have 387,000 kms and currently this is the only issue I have with the truck.

If I leave this whiney noise will it get steadily worse that I could total the whole diff ? Is there anyone else with this noise that has not repaired it and how long have you had it ?

Just wondering what to do for best ? I'm feeling like this truck is becoming somewhat of a moneypit !!

Love my Rnr, but feel all these repair bills will equal a new car loan payment !!

Well I wouldn't keep driving too much with a messed up diff. Honestly, if that's your only issue, I would put the $1k in it and be done. That's only 3 months of an average car payment and you'll be good far longer than 3 months. I wouldn't worry as much as you are. Even if you have to get a loan for it that is still much cheaper. You could spend $90-$100 on a $1k loan on 12 months.

I would get a second opinion on the price. You can purchase a complete 3rd member for about $650, but you only need the $50 bearing and maybe 3 to 4 hours labor.
