Need Help Fast! Stuck in Moab

Hey guys so currently stuck on the Porcupine Rim trail in Moab with my buddy's 2016 TRD Pro. We shut the car off to take a break and now the car is trying to turn over but won't start. All the lights come on and even the fan starts to rotate but it doesn't start up. It makes a loud click/cranking noise that seems to be on the drivers side near the brake booster area. Car has 10k miles and hasn't thrown a code. I'm a 3rd gen guy so don't know what I'm looking at.

Any thoughts would be awesome

Have you guys left the battery disconnected to reset the ECU. Also is there a chance the key fob got wet?

Trying to turn over - sounds like battery to me. I know it's new but just the same, I'd remove, clean and reinstall the battery cables. Also check the other ends at the ground connection and starter. Also is the vehicle on fairly level ground? Other than that check all electrical connections under the hood. You did bring tools right?
 
Ok thanks guys, and yes I tried resetting the ECU by disconnecting the ground cable to the battery but nothing happened. I'll try cleaning all contact points and checking connections. Just weird because the car has been flawless so far. And yes I got some tools

Agree with 304tmt..in SW, the heat will kill your battery. Usually not any warning like slow cranking... One time the engine will start up, then next time you stop and try to start , you get the lovely battery cha-cha: click, click, click...

Jump it and keep it running until you can get a new one, or be ready to jump it each time you stop.

Makes sense, so best bet would be to try and let it cool off and/or jump start it?

If you can't get a jump start you may have to go get a new battery and bring it back.

I imagine it's pretty hot in Moab now. It's over 100 degrees here in So Cal right now.

Be safe. If you have to walk out, wait until it get's cool, close to sundown. There's a 3/4 moon tonight so you can find your way after sundown. Carry lots of water. Drink as much as you can of whatever water you can't carry before you start walking.

People die trying to walk out in the desert here in So Cal.
 
Yeah probably not able to get a jump now unless someone else pulled up, luckily we are maybe only like 2 miles from sand flats road so I could make the trek. And yeah it's hot as nuts right now, like over 100, have already hiked up a mountain twice to get this cell service
 
if you don't feel you can walk it out, here is the number to canyonlands jeep rentals--they might be willing to come get you and jumpstart if you ask nicely, since you aren't too far out...

Whew thankfully got out of there. Did what you guys said and let the battery cool for 45 minutes with a damp towel over it with the ground disconnected. Crossed my fingers and it thankfully started up. Rollin back to town right now, thank you all I appreciate the quick replies!

Glad you got out safely. Heat is tough on batteries. Everyone seems to mention cold and batteries; but heat also takes it's toll. I lived in the Phoenix area for over 20 years and rarely got more than 3 - 4 years out of a battery.

Good to hear you got going again, however don't count on that battery to continue to functun at full caapacity. You may have a dead cell, so you could be stuck again if you have to stop and restart engine. Have your battery tested when you get to town!

As flyrv9 said, batteries don't last as long in hot climes. I live in the lower elevation desert where summer temps (110-120F) can kill your battery in 2 years.

Yup a jump battery is a good travel idea as b407driver mentioned. Also, now is a great time to go have that battery checked out. If I remember right you have a 2016 - so that battery may be under warranty.
