Hello everyone. I am very stupid and I admit it. Now that we have that over with, will you guys please find it in your hearts to help me? I have a 2004 4Runner SR5. Long story short, my clamp on my positive battery cable broke off at the terminal. So, I think to myself, well I will just put a new clamp on... not so easy, everything is like melted together and I would have to cut a significant amount of cable off to replace it and then it would not fit. So, the next best thing is, I will just change the cable, how hard could that be? Well, I was a little pressed for time and didn't do any research on the matter and unhooked a cable and installed the new one directly from the battery. Well, whatever I did, when I tried to start the truck, resulted in smoke coming up from underneath the engine. I wish I had a picture to show what I connected it to because I have no idea but I am guessing that it was the starter. My questions are... Can anyone tell me how to change the battery cable? And does anyone know what I fried and how do I fix it. I assume that I need to install a new starter, does anyone have pictures of that? I looked in the Chiltons book and basically it says remove this bolt, take this bolt off and wha-lah! all fixed. Something tells me it isnt that easy. HELP!!!

At the risk of sounding callus, you should have it towed to a mechanic and let a pro fix it. You've done enough damage for one day.

YOU MOST LIKELY hooked up the positive side of the battery to the ground/chassis!

At this point we'd need pictures and even then addressing all the possible damage. You may want to take it to a mechanic, at best you burned up some high amp cables, fuses, and fusible links; at worst your looking at a harness(es),module(s), ect.

It's honestly not that complicated, but I agree with others that you probably grounded out the positive some how. I rewired all the positive and negative cables in the engine on my acura and had zero issues. I also had to wire a new negative ground for my battery on my 03. Sounds like if you're struggling that you should take others' advice and get it to a mechanic

I used to be mechanically retarded. Don't feel bad no one wakes up and knows everything. I used to work on jets in the military, I wasn't retarded, but still managed to burn down a jet. I caused over 10 million in total damages.
Anyway what was the outcome? Did you figure it out or take it to a shop?
