Need help understanding damages

fishin fool

I recently purchased a 2006 4wd sr5 4runner. Such a beautiful car and so comfortable and fun to drive. For the little time I owned it I really enjoyed it, there wasnt a fishin spot in the mountains that I couldnt get to.
Unfortunately it was stolen from my driveway and driven around til it ran out of gas and was abandoned. During the thieves' joyride they wrecked and abused it in every way possible, hitting everything they could,
my drivers side door is hanging on by a thread, about every corner of the car was damaged, hood wont shut, broke my new yakima canoe rack off of the factory rack, rubbed the sides of the tires almost raw on curbs.
Basically the only reason they didnt beat it up more was because they ran out of gas.

So now I am in the process of getting a damages estimate from the insurance adjuster. They have already given me one estimate in which I was not present and I believe to be a low figure as they didnt even have the keys
to check for engine damage or potential electronic problems. The door has been hanging open in the rain and the sun for a week now and Im concerned about the interior as well.

As I am not the most automotive mechanically inclined, basically what I am asking is, when I meet with the adjuster and the body shop guy in a few days what are potential damages that I should point out to be checked?
Im already gonna lose a lot of money if I was to sell it, and if I keep it, Im afraid of problems arising down the road that will be my responsibility to fix when and if they occur. So, Can you guys give me some pointers as to what needs to be checked in order to get a thorough inspection and a fair estimate?

Thank you so much for any information you can give me. I truly appreciate it.

Good luck with the repairs, it's a long and frustrating thing. In my experience, the adjusters NEVER write up a completely accurate report because it's nearly impossible to do, especially with the level of damage that you described. However, they usually allow for this and know that the body shop is going to find other stuff that can not be found until the actual work is started.
A few years ago I was rear-ended. The initial repair quote was around the $2K mark, but the body shop found additional accident related problems and the final cost more than doubled.
Talk to the adjuster and question him/her on what their policy is regarding unforeseen damages. If you have rental car provided, make sure it is provided right up to the end, even if there is extra stuff found. (Progressive Insurance will try to take the rental away early and claim it is not their fault. )
One thing is for sure, do not expect the repairs to be completed in the time frame they state. It always goes over.
