Need help

I'm having a problem with my 97 runner cranking of alot before it starts, it has 190k on it. I just replaced the fuel pressure regulator and that helped a little bit. Anyone have any ideas on what it could be?

Is your battery good, or your alternator giving enough charge? If it's cranking for a while but eventually starting, I would start by taking a meter and checking these two things. 2nd step would probably want to check the starter out.

How's the fuel pressure after replacing the regulator? Could be fuel pump. I'd change the fuel filter for good measure too.

That's what I was going to suggest. Start with general tune- up and then go from there. Your truck just needs some luvin.

Instead of cranking the key over in one motion, turn the key to the on position so the fuel pump kicks on and sends some fuel up for a few seconds. Then try turning it over, see if it still cranks long. That will rule out a fuel issue. Otherwise, long crank times would most likely be the starter(If it sounds like the cranking is nice and strong.) Or the starter contacts.

I did the plugs and wires about a year ago, also already did the fuel filter. The turn the key on trick helps, I have also noticed that it gets worse as the fuel level in the tank gets lower.

Can you hear the fuel pump whine loudly while at idle? Good chance your pump is going out.

Sounds like your fuel pump is on it's way out. If it still runs well though I wouldn't worry about it too much. Just turn to the ON position to build a little pressure, then crank.

There is a cut out under the rear seat but it will only be good for unplugging the electrical connections before dropping the tank. I posted a pic of the location on one of Gerdo's threads that he started with a very similiar problem.
