Hello All,

I have a 1996 4cyl, 2wd, lifted runner on 32" tires, and believe it or not it actually does alright. I would like a little more power, especially for the hills, but am unsure which way to go. Has anyone tried the K&N cold air system? or does anyone have a better suggestion? Thank you in advance.

Gears....

I have the 4 cyl, 5 speed, with 265s, it does great,... but i have 4.56 gears...

The 3RZ is never going to be a torque monster, it makes peak horsepower high in the rpm band. Gears will help you take advantage of that, lucky for you since you have a 2wd you only need to do one axle.

If you are looking for engine mods then check out LCE long tube headers. And a filter element. But be warned; this will help your motor breathe, but its not like adding a blower. Its like $500 for maybe 5-10 real hp gain

Gears. Your 2WD might have 3.73's which would be your problem, a set of factory 4.10's or 4.30's would cost ~1-200$ and fix your problem. Check what ratio you have. Don't dump money into intake/exhaust, you'll see marginal gains at best.

Yeah you can do a good intake, header and full 2.5 inch exhaust with a high flow cat that is all you can do to the 2.7l fo get more power but it will be so minimal that you wont really even notice. You will get like 10 hp maybe 15 on a good day. Just boost the 2.7l theres tons if room for a turbo with the 4 banger. Gearing does help lot as well. Find a wrecked V6 4runner with 4.30 gears and swap out the 5th member, you dont need to do the complete rear end.

I use K&n filter I travel to Mexico it gave power to 80 mph

It's a K&N filter 33-2050-1 4cyl 3rze I drove 28 hours 2 days from Los Angeles to El Paso. Next day El Paso, tx to Zacatecas, Mexico with crossing to chihuahua city.
With my oem Toyota filter last year trip it reach to 70 mph. This year trip With K&N 80-81 mph. Warning in a 4cyl you start acceleration on hill it will take time. If you don't deaccerlate before on the hill it will drive on the same speed. Be aware this is 4cyl not v8 but this engine is good.

Need more power!!!

Thank you all for your great ideas. I think I will try swapping out the gears first, seems like the easiest and most cost effective. I will then start to look for a turbo, maybe a rebuilt. 4.56 gears? ....not sure if ill make it on the hwy without running at 8000 rpm's. Thanx again.
