you sacrifice wet traction big time w/ KO2's.. and i think you can say the same for any tire w/ big fat treads.. if you're willing to sacrifice cool factor then get some Michelin LTx defenders from costco which are currently on sale right now..very good performing all season tires but they'll think it's your grandpa's 4runner.. also comes in LT flavor for those rough unpaved county fair parking lots

ive also gone from KO2 to LTX and can say both are great tires in their own realm but i love the LTX for every day driving, mild trails and sandy slippery boat launches.

Consider weight

I posted this a while back. I, like you wanted a more conservative tread. I built a spreadsheet referencing tire weights and size. Hopefully this is helpful to you.
PS....I have been very happy with the Firestone's. I have noticed very little if any decrease in performance.
