I keep randomly getting a check engine light. It's not consistent but it's the dreaded shift solenoid E. I've researched old threads a little bit. Does anyone have any advice or experience with this issue?

2002 some hard shifting but it's not consistent. The hard shifting and CEL are both random. It has 213k miles.

No. I was considering changing the fluid and filter but I don't want to make it any worse.

Recommend downloading a copy, and follow the flow chart corresponding to the code number. If the solenoid is bad, you will end up changing the filter and fluid anyway. How does the fluid look? Red or brown?
