Hey yall new to the forum but not new to offroading. I have a full size chevy and lookin to go for a 4th gen 4runner. I've seen yall put on 3" lift and can stuff 285's under em. My questions are

1. what kinda mpg do you get w/ 285's with the V6
2. What kinda mpg do you get with 265's and the V6

Anything I should be looking out for?

I'm not sure if I'm gonna get the 4wd or the 2wd yet...I run some dirt and mud roads every once in a while but nothin extrreme. 4th gen 4runners aren't meant for offroad anyways. Thanks for the help.

Im pretty sure most 4th gen. owners dont find much decrease in mpg's when switching from 265's to 285's. But i wouldn't know since i dont have a 4th.

Hey M3GUMBY

First welcome to the thread.

I also used to have a full size Chevy, I used to run a 98 Tahoe 4X with a 350V8 - after 2 years, I still miss my 350 for the brute power and space, but..

I now have a 6v 4x Limited T4R and frankly the two are worlds apart.

Clearly the Toyota, does not give you anywhere near the space - it killed me at first, I only had the 4X to support my hunting and camping habbit and maybe I over pack, but I used to fill my Tahoe. Now I need to acconomize in the T4R

but I would say the sheer increase in gas milage, plus the off road ability of the 4 gen T4R will blow your mind.

The 4x system in the T4R is considerably smarter than the Chevy and its very rare you need to lock the center diff.

To specifically answer your question I am running 265 x 18s on mine I am consistantly getting 21 to 23 MPG, compared to my Tahoe at maybe 13 to 15 at most

I bought both, because of the ability to put them into 2WD mode

the toyota is a very different truck, dont discount its ability off road, with the right rubber you will be very amazed at its ability. Seriously

good luck

Joe

haha yeah man I'm serious about 4th gens not used for hard core offroad. If they were so amazing why is there only a 3" lift?

I'm not discounting at all which is why I am thinking about purchasing one. You just gotta think I'm coming from a full size truck with a large V8 that can go pretty much anywhere.

I mean obviously you could SAS but you could do that to any vehicle.

You have pics w/ a 3" lift 18" rims and 265's? Im curious. You runnin A/T's or M/T's or what?

The reason why they only make 3" lifts are because the demand for a bigger lift isnt that great, with the IFS 3" is like the maximum.
The companies that produce the lifts dont want to invest in something that wont make a profit. And most people that dont know about these forums dont even dare to take their vechicles off the road.

We can agree to disagree on that. I strongly believe if there was a 5-6 inch lift for 4runners people would buy em and throw 305's or 315's on there. I'm not saying that 4runners aren't offroad capable they are moving towards luxury SUV, rather than an offroad SUV like a Jeep, Ford or chevy truck. I would seriously doubt 4runners could out off road a jeep, or most any kind of truck.

Back to the subject, have yall been mostly pleased with your 4runners? Any downsides to em? mechanical things I should look out for?

Pics of 3" lift w/ 265's would be VERY appreciated. Thanks yall

hell no. keep your chevy and your offroad prowess.
the 4runner, my FRIEND, no matter the generation has roots that are deeply set in OFFROADING. so, before you try to DISCOUNT the 4th gen 4runner, I think you need to step back and realize that you are looking at a world of color from a perspective of black and white. we can agree to disagree on that.
If you have EVER driven a 4th gen offroad, wherever youve taken your HEAP chevy, then you would know that 3" is more than sufficient.

There are 5"-6" lift kits for the 4r, look at all the FJ GARBAGE. there ya go, GO OFFROAD. haha, CHEVY, YEAH. ive been there man, u are wasting your time in driving that pile aswell as this HEINOUS topic.

oh man, IGNORANCE is BLISS.... right?

I understand the 4runner has deep roots. I was just saying that the new ones are hitting the urban trails more, not dirt. If you wanna flame me just for saying its not as capable as other SUV's out there go for it. I just wanted to ask some simple questions.

Yall immediately have to jump to conclusions because I said the 4th gen wasn't as capable as previous generations.

I guess I'm just a dumb ignorant off roader. Last time I hit the trails there were...Jeeps, Ford and Chevy trucks...I've never seen anyone off road a 4th gen. I've seen millions take their kids to soccer practice.

Show me some "hard core" off roading and put me in my place. Until then, I'll go out wheel a 4runner with my heap

So this is going sideways and it shouldnt, we all enjoy the same thing here. Off roading. Sure you have a point about the soccer moms and like. In my mind its true for every 4X made, including Hummers where I live, and yes I dont see a lot of 4Gen T4Rs where I wheel, I guess they are just too new, too nice to get scratched up, my limited tacked a bunch of trails in snow this past winter, along with all sorts of other 4x SUV and jeep shortys.

If you go over to this sister site http://www.toyota120.com/ you will see lots of technical info and video's etc of off roading using the toyota 120 platform, that is the basis of the T4R.

For the record, I was very impressed with my Chevy Tahoe 4X, it took me into lots of nasty places, and so does my T4R, the differences, as I said before, gas milage and interior space, also the T4R has less of the lounge room chair while it is going down the highway, its much more responsive in steering and handling.

I suggest you take a few out for a test drive.

Its a free world, your choice dude.

all the best

Finally someone that understands my standpoint that doesn't get all heated when I try to make a point. This is exactly the information I was looking for. Thanks for the help I appreciate it

Yes I know its worth what you pay for it.

Its my experience that the Toyota sales folks - barely have a clue about how clever and sophisticated the ATRAC and Locking Center Diff system is on the various Toyota products.

Read all you can about ATRAC and Center Diff Lock system, its almost anti-intuitive in how it works, applying braking to the wheels that slip and putting negative torque back into the system, thereby locking the center and the open diffs front and back

Essentially creating a locked diff front and back (without the hassels that can cause for regular driving)

My opinion is with the right set of Rubber on any of these 4Xs they would just about climb a wall.

Far superior than any of the old LSDs and Lockers I grew up with, in the Army and in my opinion superior to anything made in the late 1990s or early 2000s

Great debate up in hea!

Let me jus rain in real fas

I came from a 1989 dodge d150 p/u 2 wheel with skinny doolie tires...the only thing I miss is the interior room...das about it...I used to call it the yacht because it was so huge, heavy and "floaty".

my 4th gen is the bomb!!! I too am looking to put my 4R on 35-36's on about a 12 or 14 inch wide rim (havent decided yet on the size of the diameter yet). I was bummed when I found out that they only make a freaking 3 inch lift.

That being said, the power to rate ratio on these new 4R are off the chain. There is so much technology in them that I am still learning new things my 4R can do. Pound for pound, completely stock, and under 35K, the 4R is definitely a top competitor. Pot holes are no problem, rough roads, etc. The XREAS system is a must (sport package).

However, since I believe in balance, a limitation besides the interior room (which is still larger than previous gens) is the ground clearance...the freaking ground clearance...whose idea was it to lose ground clearance...why couldn't we have gained ground clearance instead...LET US PRAY!!

N - E Ways, You should test drive one, but you are getting yourself one of the best overall vehicles on the road.

I love you. And the taste of urine

Oh super I didn't know Bear Grylls visited this site.

To me it sounds like yall would agree with me it can off road, but nothing too extreme. Ground clearance both under the chassis and bumper approach angles kinda get in the way. 285's can only go so far...

I'll definitely check one out, but for now do yall have any pics of 3" with 265's? Maybe some uh oh off road pics if you got em
