Just picked up a stock SR5 4X4 with 180k miles on it today. Was the key part of my get out of my car payment get a car in cash plan, get a cool ride while doing it!

Thanks to the buyers guide sticky I knew what to look for and now I know what I need to get done first.

Got a long list of tune up to do over the next week or two before I can start doing the fun stuff, priorities....

OK just ordered all the tune up parts. Plugs, wires, both O2 sensors, PCV, air filter, fuel filter, radiator and seafoam. That should give me something to do this weekend!

I'd like to get all the above done plus clean the MAF/TB this weekend, maybe save the radiator for the next weekend. Oh and the prior owner left the interior absolutely filthy, deep cleaning will be a high priority this too.

Should end up nicely tuned up and revitalized. Will plan on replacing the ball joints once I get enough saved for a OME suspension lift later this year.

The radiator is actually quite easy to do. I had mine swapped out and the new back in in roughly 30-45mins.

With the rash of recent LBJ failures we've witnessed, I'd make sure yours have been replaced before putting it on the back burner. You're at 180k miles and if they are the original joints, I'd be nervous driving the vehicle.

I've had great luck with homemade laundry detergent and water on cloth seats lately. Fels Naptha, washing soda, and Borax. My seats look sparkly new now!

Not sure on part#s But They Must Be OEM, not moog or whatever brand - based on many posts here the non-oems will fail soon. Fun & Luck my friend!

I'm going to second that. Mine seemed to be fine, but I started to get a popping noise when going from reverse to drive after backing out of a parking spot. I suspect it's probably a body mount, but I always considered the LBJ too and there have been a lot of failures reported here recently.

I went ahead and purchased the parts and had them laying in the garage for a few weeks because I was busy. I had the GF in the truck going to the airport a few days ago and it occurred to me that a LBJ failure on one of the high overpasses in Miami would probably result in both of us falling 5 stories to our death. :nono: I'm in the process of changing them right now.

Thanks so much everyone! I'll go ahead and do this fisrt thing this weekend. Didn't see any thread on a how to, anyone know if this is a long process or can be done with as much ease as a break job, any special tools needed to be rented?

It's not too bad, but you have to have the ball joint puller to get it done. Some people get them apart by beating on them, but that didn't work on mine. I'm replacing upper and lower ball joints, as well as the inner and outer tie rods, so basically everything that's on the truck now is going in the trash. I beat the hell out of it just to see if it would come apart and it didn't. I wouldn't try that method if you're planning on reusing the tie rod ends.

Yeah after reading all that I will just buy or rent a puller from auto zone. Just replacing the LBJs, will replace the uppers and tie rods when I get around to a lift.

I wanted to get all the important tune up and safety updates done first.

Project tune up is officially underway. Got the keyfob I ordered off Amazon programmed with quickness thanks to the guide provided here this morning. New windshield set up for install on Monday, new tires and wheels on Wednesday (MB TKO Black wheels on 265/70r16s).


All tune up parts received, check.
Forecast for tomorrow is all clear.
Ready to get some work done tomorrow!

Hey! I'm need a key fob for mine where did you go? I've got an antenna behind my rear view mirror that says omega. But I have only one key and no fob.

Got the key fob from Amazon. Worked like a charm!

Clean throttle body & MAF done

Replace both O2 sensors done
Replace radiator & hoses done
Reset EFI done
Replace Fule filter done
Seafoam treatment done
Mobile 1 oil change done


While I was down there I went ahead and scrapped the running boards and chrome wheel well trim.

Not a bad day's work!
