We just bought a 3rd Gen for my son last week. It is a 2002 SR5, automatic with 4x4. $147k miles. Looks to be in great shape. It appears to have been repainted - but a nice job. Had a good Carfax with frequent maintenance and oil changes. Runs well. Looks like it has a new front bumper.

Thanks for the info on this board. Also thanks to those guys I contacted regarding their trucks. Everyone has been great. Hope I can be a contributor here.

Son wants to put a lift kit on it and an exhaust and stereo of course - with sub. What is a good stereo upgrade for a teen? Is there a kit with storage are if using a DIN radio?

there is enough out there that you/he can do anything he wants.

as far as stereo goes. there are whats called single din or double din radios. double dins are twice as tall as singles. they are generally used for touch screen radios now. single dins are usually around $100 and doubles with your basic touchscreen are about $250 and up. (look through my build thread i posted a link of and my 1st 4runner you will see a single din and my second you will see a double din touchscreen)

anything you put in as far as stereo system will be better than stock. the stock speakers are made out of a paper type material that do not hold up to teenager music! (i used to be one 4 years ago) the new ones you buy will be build a lot better because they are made from rubber and not paper. i would recommend ether polk, kicker, alpine, infinity, pioneer speakers. they are all good.

here is a link to my build thread, if you have any questions about audio from what you see let me know. as far as lift questions. i should pass. http://www.toyota-4runner.org/3rd-gen-t4rs/128879-shoots-build-thread.html

Its good to have you on the forum! you will learn a lot of stuff on here as i have. Good luck! let me know if you have any more questions.

To continue about the stereos, your t4r comes with a double din. You can get that little pocket if you install an aftermarket single din head unit.

I just ordered my head unit from Crutchfield and they threw in the wiring harness, pocket, and pretty good instructions for free.

I'm running a 10" infinity sub in a small sealed enclosure with a maybe 300watt amp and sounds pretty good. Surprisingly enough you cant hardly hear it from the outside.

Bigger and multiple subs / amps will be heard blocks away. Something to consider

Thanks. Does it make sense to add an amp and sub before replacing head unit? Just thinking about his cash flow.
