New 4runner for not?

Hi All,

Looking for some advice. I have a 1996 Toyota 4runner Limited. It has been a great truck since I've owned it since 2003. It's starting to show her age. Just replaced the master cylinder, needs tie rods, lower ball joints, the rear axle is leaking on the right passenger side. 230,000 miles engines run good. Interior is in good shape except for torn leather front seats and stained carpet do to leak in sunroof, clearcoat is peeling off paint.

I've been looking at a new 2018 Toyota 4runner SR5 Premium, XP edition. 41,746 MSRP, $5,333 discount so, 37.4 out the door. but damn, not looking forward to a big monthly payment. Just been weighing the large expenses if I keep the 3rd gen 4runner for few more years. Cost of new tranny? etc.

It'll be cheaper to keep her, but if you want a new one, go for it.

I'd try to find one without the XP package, they mark up all the things they add for that a LOT. You can add the accessories you want and leave the others off for much less money. You can almost get into a Off Road Premium for that price.

Is there much of a comparison? The 3rd gen will be cheaper and do the job. It's 20+ years old and needs some refreshing, isn't that bound to happen? Not like it owes you a penny considering you've used it all these years. It's just that the features in newer cars are a lot nicer to have around everyday, and I don't blame anyone for wanting them. When you step into a 3rd gen, you definitely must learn to appreciate simplicity of the past.

I was in your position too looking at a 2018. The SR5 Premium with XP is what I was planning on getting but honestly the price of an Off-Road Premium is about the same. I went with that as I feel the added off-road capabilities would come in handy.

I'll take a look the off road models. The XP Predator package adds $3299 to the truck. I've been trying to research how much after market duratracs and rims would be if I went with just a SR5 Premium 4WD.

TRD Pro rims are probably around 700-800 or so from what I’ve seen. I’ve considered getting a set but I’m oretty happy with the ORP wheels that came on it (silver and black).

If you can afford it I'd go for it. The piece of mind of having a much more reliable vehicle and not having to wrench on it in your spare time is worth it. Take that time and go wheelin'.
