New 4Runner Owner and questions

Hi Everyone,

So I picked up a 2005 4wd sport a couple of weeks ago and I love the truck. I got this purely as a toy so of course the first thing I am looking to do is get it off the ground a bit. I have been scouring the forums for two weeks now. I have to say you guys are a plethora of information. Kudos to all of you for that.

Anyway I had a couple of questions I was hoping you guys could help out with. Any input would be much appreciated.

Let me start by saying the truck has X-Reas on it now. At this point it has 120k on it and I am inclined to ditch the system all together and go with something different. Just a side note: It still drives and handles amazingly.

So for my use I will mostly be doing short camping trips and some overland type stuff. I won't be climbing or doing any heavy off roading in it.

After reading countless pages of lift - lift/tire info I would like to run the setup I was thinking about by the members here.

To start I would like it lifted a bit but nothing too much. I was thinking about Toytec or Radflo adjustable coilovers in the front, for a 2-2 1/2" lift.

Then for the rear I just happen to have a set of Fj coils with 20k on them. I was thinking of pairing them up with a set of bilsteins.

Any thoughts or advice on that setup?

Also with a setup like that what are you opinions the LR UCA's - I am thinking I most likely wont need them but they may help keeping everything in spec.

The other question is do you think I will need the sway bar relocates?

Again anything will be helpful. Thanks much in advance.

To help with your questions:

Toytec and Radflo CO's are both great. The Toytec kit includes Bilstein 5100's and the Radflo's come in 2 flavors, 2.0 or 2.5 depending on if your running accessories like bumpers, winches, etc. Both will suit your needs. You don't necessarily need new UCA's with 2.5" of lift but if you plan on going higher in the future and have the funds then I say do it all at the same time. Up to you.

For the rear you will need a spacer if you plan on using the FJ coils. They only provide approx. .5" of lift alone. I highly recommend Toytec Superflex rear coils and that will give you 2" of lift in the rear. If you don't lift the rear, it'll have the "bro" lean in front with your CO's. There are other lift coils out there that also will work well (Icon, Sway-away, and others). Couple them with some longer shocks (like 5100's) and your set.

Of course, there's TONS of different opinions and options you can choose from. OME also makes some awesome kits and they are cost effective. Good luck and lets see some pics when it's lifted.

Thanks much for the welcome.

I was thinking the FJ springs in the rear over the superflex because they only provide a small amount of lift. Then I wouldn't have to crank the coil overs all the way up and this would pretty much level out the beast. But seeing as I am new to this I am sure I could have been wrong (more likely than not).

The other concern I has was the ride on road. Seeing as I live in SoCal I always have long street ride to get off road.

As far as the budget for this project, its all good adding the UCA's or superflex springs wouldn't be an issue. I was shying away from the icons because I was thinking they would be overkill for my needs. At this point I don't plan on bumpers. Although I know how it goes once I start on a project like this. It just keeps getting bigger and bigger.....lol.

Any advise as to what coilovers setup would provide the ride on the road? Its seems the older I get the more a harsh ride wears on me...lol.

Thanks again.

If you're looking to get 2 - 2.5" of lift in the front, you will definitely need something in the rear or you'll get the dreaded "bro" lean (as seen here on this Taco). :wow: The FJ coils aren't enough to level everything out. For instance, when I first installed my 5100's w/ FJC coils it was almost perfectly level from front to rear (set at 2nd notch for 1.75" of lift in front). I went to the top notch (2.25" of lift) and added the Superflex coils in the rear and I now have a 1" rake and love the stance.

I see what you mean, Thanks much for that info. That one issue solved. I knew it would pay to ask you guys.
