New 4Runner owner needs help emission leak

Bought a new to me 2008 V6 Urban Runner addition last Monday. 68k miles. A few days ago the check engine light and stability control light came on and the ESC light began blinking. I checked the forum here and immediately checked the gas cap, which seemed loose. I tightened it and disconnected the battery to clear the lights.

Lights came back on yesterday. Truck is running fine. Checked the gas cap again and with a very light counter clockwise move it comes off. No click or release of pressure. Does not feel secure.

Went to autozone and had codes checked. It showed:
Evaporative emission control system pressure leak.
Detected large leak.
1. Faulty fuel cap.
2. Evap line leakage.
3. Pump module failure.
4. Canister faulty.

I bought a new gas cap at Autozone, it seems to fit worse than the original cap. Would a oem cap from toyota make a difference?

What can I do to check the other potential problems listed?

Are these expensive fixes?

I appreciate any advice. Like to do things on my own if I can. Frustrating when you buy a car and the warning lights start coming on a few days later.

i am not sure who makes the OEM Gas cap, but the Stant one i tried from the parts store fit like crap. I ended up ordering an OEM one from Amazon for cheap.

Buy an OEM cap. I'm sure by looking at your replacement universal gas cap that it doesn't look or perform like your OEM cap.

They reset your codes and see what happens. My OEM cap occasionally becomes loose and I've had to once reset the CEL from it.

The warning lights are off now after codes are cleared. I am going to head to toyota tomorrow and purchase,a,oem gas,cap. I hope this works.

Got a oem cap from toyota today. $30 which seems crazy, but there is a definite snap and unlock when I turn it counter clockwise to remove which was happening with the old one. I will drive it for awhile and hopefully this fixes the issue. Thx for the responses.

Back in '09 (I think) my OEM cap would no longer stay tight and would throw that code. A new OEM cap did the trick.

I put a oem cap on this morning. Drove around a bit and went through a few ignition cycles, no lights so far. You can definitely feel a click and release when you unscrew it now. So fingers crossed,I think the cap was the issue. Thanks for the replies. I love my 4runner. It is a blast to drive

This same thing happened to me. Recently bought it and the code starts up. I put a new gas cap on that I bought from Toyota (was 22.99 but they discounted it to 15 when I told them I could get it cheaper somewhere else). Light turned on again this morning. I'm going to clear it one more time. If it comes back on I will take it in.

I had the same thing happen to me this month. 2005 V6. Turned the gas cap 5 clicks, solved the problem. I ordered a new OEM cap and will replace when it gets here.
