Just picked up this '06 4WD w/4.7L 101k mikes - Smooth running vehicle. It needed a windshield - already replaced. Seat covers and dash mat are also requirements here in the desert SW.
Plan to use it as a tow (rated 7,000 lbs. for a travel trailer 21 ft)/ commuter vehicle / mild to moderate wheeling. Have a 97 Wrangler set up for the rough off road stuff. Alternatively, the Wrangler could be flat towed easily behind the 4Runner to location.
First stop after driving the 4Runner for a couple of weeks is the shop for the good old timing belt/water pump routine. Done some mechanical work on other vehicles myself (setting up differentials, ring and pinions, etc), but want to leave this one to the experts. The thought of driving a valve down through the top of a piston sends chills.
I hear a thud when rolling from a stop. Another poster says the drive line components need lubed. These are the kinds of tips worth their weight.
The simpler things I can take care of.
The '97 Wrangler has Detroit Tru-Trac limited slips at both ends and a 3" lift. Almost unstoppable so far. Scares me sometimes.
