New 4th gen *update*

Just traded a 2000 in on a 2008. Love it; bigger, faster, better ride quality.

Followed instructions found on this forum and installed the smokers kit ($37.99 off flea bay, 5.5 mins work).

Replaced the lamps in the clock/climate control($10 from stealership, 6 mins)

I'm concerned with the front suspension now. I hit some speed bumps in my complex every day. The 2000 hit em and never really stressed the front or back end. Not much movement.

The 2008 (Goldrunner) feels like it is hitting the bumpers. Is this suspension really that much softer than the 3 gen, or do I need new shocks?

69k on Goldie, 225k on the 3gen.

I feel my 4th rides much smoother than my 3rd.

May I bother you for the part number of the climate control light bulbs?
 
There is actually the diagram posted here somewhere. I found it, saved it to my photos, and took it to the stealer parts dept.

Mine hit the front bumpstops stock, but not the rears. The front is just too low stock. Aftermarket fixed all that
 
op, you must of gotten an sr5 with stock tokico shocks, yea, aftermarket will take care of that, may want to check out some 5100's
 
Yeah, looking at the "billies".

How are these adjusted? Do you have to jack up the truck or what?

Haven't been able find the actual procedure for this.
 
Thanks Stuck. I viewed that, but still didn't understand the procedure. I have since discovered that to adjust the height the coils must be removed. I have decades of experience adjusting spring rates on motorcycles and ATV's so I ASSUMED these would be similar. Put the spanner on it and turn!

My bad. I'll have to remove these coil overs and compress the spring to change the height.

I ordered a full set of Bils once my mechanic gave me a decent labor quote, and told me that I really should change all of em at the same time.

He's inexpensive and honest. He recommended me to 4runners in the first place, so I told him I'll get em and bring em to him.

Next issue is to determine the best setting for me. I'm thinking the second, .85 setting is the one for me.....
 
I had a different shop install a "cat lock" system today.

The catalytic converter was sawed off my '00 about 7 months after I got it back in '08. I had no idea about this plague back then. 300 bones, hope it makes the scumbags go somewhere else for their fix....
 
Bilstiens installed. .85 setting.
Front was 18" from center of hub to fender. Now 19.75"
Rear was 21". Now 21.25"

Rides more like the 3rd gen. I also replaced the sway bar bushings and end links.

Will report after more miles...

What do you mean? Was the cat being cut off a good thing or bad? With past vehicles it's usually good. Were your cats part of the exhaust manifold? I have an 05 V8 and was wondering if I can achieve this.

His catalytic converter was stolen from his vehicle and scrapped for the precious metals inside it. The cat lock prevents this from happening again.

O.o Holy Hell!!! Going to have to go look up cat lock now. lol. Question remanes though, can we take the cats off these trucks?

Hopefully! The shop that replaced it said a local carpet company had something like 10 trucks parked in their yard and all of the cats were stolen one night.

I've heard thieves will steal them off vehicles while people are in the grocery store or Wal-mart....follow them to the store, wait till they go inside, sawzall the thing right off!
 
Back to the mods...

I'm AMAZED at the improved handling the bils give this lump. I changed out the sway bar bushings at the same time so I dunno if it is them or the shocks that did it, but this truck turns and steers so much better.

The ride height is perfect for me, a little taller than 3gen, but you gotta look close to see the difference between this and stock 4gen.

The ride is somewhere in between...much more "sure footed" than it was, but still smoother, softer than the 2000.

Very recommended, glad I didn't put it off till later. I was actually a little disappointed in this newer one until now.

Now that this runner handles great, has enough power for me, I'm noticing that it doesn't seem to brake as well as I'd prefer.

The calipers make some noise when I back out of or pull into a parking spot, and this lump doesn't stop as quickly/smoothly as the 3rd gen it replaced.

Is a regular brake service in order, or should I look at upgrades?

I had it aligned BTW, and it was only out of spec on the toe .19 after the bilsteins. Tech said probably never aligned from new, so it seems the mild lift does not affect alignment.
