New 5th gen owner

Hi,

I'm a new 5th gen owner. I just traded in my 3rd gen last week for a 2012 SR5. It's 100% stock. It's got 100k miles on it.

I'm looking to upgrade suspension and tires, but I don't want to go crazy. It will be my DD. I'm looking at going with the TRD pro or similar for a slight lift. It's in desperate need of new tires and I'm looking for recommendations based off the experiences of others here who are in a similar situation. 95% on road driving in the Midwest, so tires that perform well in snow and ice are a must. I like more aggressive looking tires, but I don't want to completely sacrifice MPG or ride quality. I'm planning to stick with stock size.

Recommendations?

Can’t go wrong with bilstein 5100’s and falken at3w wildpeaks. Looks great and I have had them on my 4Runner for the last 30k miles.
 
Welcome. I also went from a 3rd to a 5th gen last summer. I went with a mild Bilstein 5100, Dobinsons stock size coils, and Falken AT3s. Rides great on and off road. Looks good but not gaudy. Search feature is gonna help you out with a ton of results.

It depends on your budget but start researching Bilstein 5100s or 6112s, Old Man Emu (OME), and Dobinson lifts on this site.



Goodyear Duratracs and BFG KO2s are the only two tire options. Everything else anyone mentions regarding tires is incorrect.

So I had falcon ATW3s on my 3rd gen. I was pretty happy with them over all, but noticed two things about them. I upgraded too them and went slightly larger than stock tire size at 265/75/16 and it felt like it made the 3rd gen really dog and hurt MPG some. Secondly, around 60-70 mph, they would shake real bad. Seemed like a balance issue, but then I saw a thread here that 5th gen owners were having that same issue. You guys notice that at all?

People have reported the shaking with all sorts of tires on 5th gens. I experience it, seems to come and go. I check my tire pressure and adjust weekly, and that seems to keep it at bay. I upgraded suspension, which calmed it down too.

For whatever reason, everything needs to be perfect for it not to be a factor for me. But others don't have this problem at all. Hopefully you fall into this group. It's not a huge deal to me, just a slight inconvenience that only happens around 50 MPH sometimes.

I'll probably try a different tire than the KO2 next time to see if that makes a difference.
