New 5th Gen Syndrome

How long did your “brand new car” syndrome last with your 5th Gen? I lasted a little over 4 weeks of washing twice a week, parking at the back of the parking lot, going 1 mph over railroad tracks, etc.

I’m kinda relieved that it’s over! Now I wash once a week and park with everyone else. [emoji1317][emoji1317]

Did you know you actually cause more wear to your suspension slowing down over railroad crossings?
Done at slow speed, that's a lot of rocking back and forth. Done at an appropriate speed the suspension doesn't fully articulate over the individual bumps, hence travels less and wears less. You also don't get the side to side motion with each bump, hence no whiplash. You also miss out on the blaring horn and middle finger of the guy behind you.
The only railroad crossings worth slowing down for are:
1) the one that requires you to stop for the train actually crossing your path
2) the ones where you're not crossing at a road way and therefore require 4WD or a Dukes of Hazzard method to cross.
The 4Runner is a more capable vehicle than many of its drivers. Any of the 4Runner suspensions can handle a few bumps of less than 3" at an appropriate speed. If the crossing has bumps more than 3" it's in need of repair and I suggest you contact local law enforcement office or government official to pass along a repair request.

Definitely don’t care about that. The guy behind me can worry about himself and keeping a safe distance.

What is a safe speed since you mention there being a safe speed to go over railroad tracks?

Also, do you get outside of your 4Runner and measure railroad tracks to see if they’re less or more than 3 inches before going over them?

Had mine about a week and a half and the front bumper fairing got ripped off in a deep puddle, along with my front license plate.

Bought the black pro one and it went from there.
 
You know it’s funny you mention that. It seems my TRD Pro takes water pretty hard. I would figure with a standard lift and big tires it wouldn’t be so bad but it’s actually quite rough!

Less then a week after driving mine off the lot, I put some mild trail stripes on her while exploring some forest roads in Tennessee.

If you're slowing to 1mph to cross the tracks, you might as well stop on the tracks and measure 3"! (That's what she said!)

I never mentioned safe, I said appropriate. I've crossed railroad tracks at 75mph, and others I've creeped over at 5mph. It's what is appropriate to the conditions, which are often defined by the speed of the idiot in front of you.

WARNING: SCIENCE/NERD ALERT
Simplified, the suspension movement is with the physics of simple harmonic oscillators and interference waves. In this case destructive interference is your goal, the smoothest ride, created by the harmonic return of your spring (suspension) out of phase with the wave of the ground form (railroad crossing). The issue is that the crossing is significantly less than ideal, flat waveform, and is often irregular. So while a speed X might produce a flat waveform at the first several bumps, that same speed might provide constructive interference on the 2nd set of tracks. Hence your desired speed should be the one that produces the flattest waveform, or smallest deflection of your mass (wheel assembly) on your spring (suspension). By reducing to the minimum speed, you're attempting to ride the waveform up and down, actually creating a situation of constructive interference. Which is why the bumps feel much more significant at slower speeds.
Can you do the math on every railroad crossing on your daily commute? Sure. But who has time for stuff like that, and with CommonCore you'd probably lose your job before you found an answer. The best advice, learn the tracks you drive on a regular basis. Approach them at varying speeds and see which provides the smoothest ride. It could be the speed limit, 10 over speed limit, 7mph, 34mph, you won't know until you try. While the unsprung mass changes very slowly (weight of wheel assembly) the weight of the vehicle may change on a daily basis, fuel level, passengers, cargo, gear, etc. That determines the amount of force already on the springs, and hence their ability to absorb more force along the waveform.

Though Luke & Bo preferred the physics of ballistic arcs, thereby negating the interference from the crossing, as demonstrated by acceleration over an inclined plane.

I had mine offroad when I still had temporary tags

Its scratched to hell now from trails and it's great because I don't have to worry about how it looks
 
Took it to an offroad class the following week after I got it.

I think the toughest part to get over was pinstriping. Ok with it now but I detail it when I can.
 
From the dealership to the ranch.
Got the west Texas pinstripes from the mesquite and cedar within days. I do wash and wax it once a month on average. I still like it after 4 years and 8 months.

Made it three months before getting some pinstripes from an oak branch on a narrow trail. Followed by the first real wash I've given it. Hopefully the next time won't hurt so much!
 
Put 40 miles or so worth of dirt roads on it the day after I bought it. Nothing serious but some solid dirt driving and articulation the day after buying.

I’ve never understood buying a car capable of something specific, and not using it for that. I get not wanting to inflict damage but most forest roads are quite a bit more rough than some railroad tracks.
 
I live a few miles down dirt roads. It was muddy the day I got it home.
Though used, the Metallic Midnight Black was pristine.
Next day started the Arizona pinstripe.
I knew it would get scratched/dinged in a parking lot, so I wanted to do it first having fun.
Wife was kinda angry, but she has her pickup, I have the 4runner (and my pickup).
It's been six months now and there is A LOT of pinstripe.

I took mine to Drummond Island on the U.P. the same week my permanent tags were put on.
I'll be at one year tomorrow and I still baby it like crazy. Example - had someone push a shopping cart into the passenger front fender/bumper cover, scuffed down to the plastic a few inches long, so I had it resprayed within a week.
I also had a 12 year old Audi that I babied until the day I parted with it. The paint was just as good the days I bought and sold. The interior looked unused and it had 130k+ miles.
