My brother has one. He brought it out to my place a couple of times.
Disadvantages:
You have to tow it to where you are going to start off-roading.
Then you have to return to the same place to haul it home.
He and his wife were covered in dust at the end of the day.
My wife and I in the T4R were nice and clean and cool.
Then when not in use you have to store it some place.
But it is a fun toy if someone else owns it.....
Have fun with it.

Just make sure you and your best friend have some sort of agreement drawn out when one of you wants out. It happens, believe me.

Truth, my brother in law and one of his buddies went in together on a Kawasaki, then two years ago the rear axle broke and it has sat in my brother in law's garage ever since. Not sure how it broke or who did it, according to my sister it is a major sore spot and apparently the two guys aren't even on speaking terms anymore. I keep offering to haul it away...

I'm in love with this thing. Got it on Saturday and I've taken it out 3 times since. My best friend and I bought it together and it's our first side-by-side, with the intention of eventually racing it. Who else has one? Any advice you wish you heard earlier?
I'm sure it's a regional thing but around here those are hated. We have a major trail system nearby (Hatfields and McCoy) that is several hundred miles long and designed for OHV 4Wheelers and side by sides. It seems like the standard owner profile goes like this:
You must be fat, like belly hanging over belt fat.
You must have scraggly beard
You must only use a bro dozer truck to haul them.
Your IQ must not exceed 100.
You must have no respect for any laws
You must only operate them while intoxicated.
You must think and fantasize you are a racer and put cool numbers and cool names on the side by side and trailers. Also the back window of your lifted Chevy running 24's and low profile off road tires.
I'm joking but we (locals) cringe when we see a side by side coming up the highway. Seriously it seems like most of these guys think they are Bo and Luke Duke and the highway is for them to show off. Not a week goes by that someone from Michigan or Georgia is either arrested or injured when they trailer them here to "ride."
I like them but after seeing what type of person these attract I wouldn't get one and neither would any of the locals. If I were going to buy another motorized plaything it would be two wheeled enduro. Those guys at least have to stay sober enough to keep it upright.
OP not busting on you but don't be surprised if the locals dislike you on your travels. I'm sure they are fun but they definitely attract some stupid people.

Seriously sweet toy, and I've thought about getting one, but in all honesty, my 4runner can go anywhere those things can go- at least around my neck of the woods.
Your garage seems to have some sweet toys.

As many have alluded to I've already began to learn that most people aren't a fan of the owners these things seem to attract, so we'll just have to be the exception not the rule.
I agree that our 4R's are superior in crawling situations, mainly because this thing does not have a 5-speed gearbox, just H & L. Even more of a downside is it's not like a typical vehicle where you can put it in gear and the vehicle will creep forward. You actually have to give it gas to engage the clutch (it's a CVT), which can lead to having to tackle obstacles faster that you would like.
That being said, we didn't get it to crawl, we got it to tear through the desert at high-speed. The trails around here are wide and usually dry, so we're not tearing it up anymore than a 4x4 would. I was also starting to not feel so great about putting all the wear and tear on my 4R since it's my only vehicle and daily driver, and with 16"F/18"R suspension travel and ~12lb/hp power-to-weight ratio it's something my 4R could never be.
Apparently it also makes for a great bird nest. It was parked at the campsite this weekend and this persistent little bird made a nest in it two nights in a row.

I know you're just making a point, but in the case of the second pic that's not true haha. This is where I had to turn around in the Runner. Thankfully there was a sharp turn wide enough to make a 15 point turn right behind me. To get to this point I walked on foot for 1.5 miles to make sure there was a place to turn around, while moving big rocks out of the way.
