New Headunit and Backup Camera

I purchased a new 2010 SR5 and after 120k, its time for a little interior refresh.

After hours or searching the forum and reading up on headunits and mods, I think I have decided on getting a Kenwood DDX6903S (I like having a volume knob) with the maestro and scosche dash kit (and everything else Crutchfield recommends), but would love to add a backup camera at the same time.

Has anyone done this? If not, any recommendations on aftermarket backup cameras?

I've never changed my stock navi HU, but before you do that, just be sure that it comes with the steering wheel device/harness so that you can still control the audio system from the buttons on the SW!

Does the 2010 have a backup camera back by the license plate? If so, did it display on the factory head unit screen? I had a 2008 4Runner that did not have a camera or head unit screen. Here's how I added it the backup camera:

Replaced factory head unit with a Kenwood unit similar to the one you mentioned.

Installed the camera in the plastic "hood" that is just above the read license plate. This is where the factory camera is installed.

Ran a power wire and the video feed wire through the rear hatch panel and into the head liner. Used a fish tape to get the wires to the front of the vehicle. It was a pain to maneauver around the support beams in the ceiling and the sunroof. One the wires were fished-out in the front, I connected the power wire to a wire that gets "hot" when reverse is engaged. The wire was under the plastic kick panel next to where your left foot goes on the driver side near the parking brake. I don't recall what color it was or the exact location but a search will find it for you. Plug the video feed wire with the RCA plug into the head unit. Change the settings on the Kenwood to turn on and display when there's a video feed. I'm pretty sure those instructions are in the Kenwood manual.

If I were to do it over again: I wouldn't run the wires through the headliner to the front. It took two people and a lot of time. Instead, I'd run the wires from the cargo hatch, into the headliner, down the rear pillar into the area where the jack is located. Then I'd run them through the rear wheel well, through the trough where the plastic panels are located on the rear and front doors step areas. The process may sound daunting but it was actually quite easy. It was the first electrical thing I had ever done on a vehicle and it worked like a champ.

Relocating backup camera

I know this isn't the right thread but I'm new and having a heck of a time finding a useful thread. Would appreciate any guidance.

2017 Off Road with Wilco Hitchgate Solo installed (looks awesome) but I can't use my backup camera. I saw one post that was fairly comprehensive but it isn't clear to me which wires are getting cut and where they are connecting to. Can anyone send me to the right thread or, even better, if you have any suggestions for relocation! Thank you in advance.

Well I finally got all the parts in from crutchfield. I ended up with the following:

- Kenwood Excelon DDX9903S
- Metra AX-TOYUSB-2 USB Port Cable
- Scosche TA2106B Dash Kit
- iDatalink Maestro ADS-MRR Interface Module
- iDatalink HRN-RR-TO1 Factory Integration Adapter


I also ordered a backup camera from Amazon:

I added a backup cam to a vehicle other than the 4Runner, but it was pretty simple. The camera I got came with a composite video RCA (the yellow one), that also had a small power wire running inside the sheath. I ran the RCA/power wire along the frame rail and up into the cab via a rubber grommet in the floor, then under the carpet to behind the dash (I'm sure there's a similar method for the 4R). The The input for the Kenwood is a composite RCA as well, so you simply connect the RCA's together then connect the power wire to the head unit's 12v accessory wire. Then all I had to do was find a place for the ground near the rear bumper. From there your Maestro module will tell the head unit when the vehicle in in reverse and automatically switch to the cam.

So how did it go!? I'm wanting to do the same thing with my 2010 SR5 that doesn't have a stock NAV head unit or backup cam.
